Lehre und Wehre.
Jahrgang VII. Juni 1861. No. 6.
Theologische Axiome.
(Fortsetzung.)
XIV. Vom Evangelium und dessen Unterschied vom Gesetz.
1. Evangelium in scriptura interdum dicitur lex, sed nuspiam lex
evangelium.
lorum praedicatione, certum est, a potiori doctrinae parte, videlicet a pro-
missione gratiae, denominationem fieri.
5. Ubicunque evangelio opponitur doctrina legis, ibi certum est, evan-
gelii appellatione doctrinam gratiae intelligi.
Gnade verstanden werde.

Volume VII. June 1861. No. 6.
Theological Axioms.
(Continued.)
XIV. On the Gospel and Its Distinction from the Law.
1. Evangelium in scriptura interdum dicitur lex, sed nuspiam lex
evangelium.
The Gospel is sometimes called Law in Scripture, but nowhere is the
Law called Gospel.
legis.
The word Gospel is taken either in the proper sense, for the doctrine
of the forgiveness of sins through faith in Christ by grace, or in the
improper sense, for the doctrine of grace and of the law taken together.
praedicatione, certum est, a potiori doctrinae parte, videlicet a promissione
gratiae, denominationem fieri.
When the word Gospel is taken in the wider sense for the whole preaching
of Christ and the apostles, it is certain that the name is given from the
more principal part of the doctrine, namely from the promise of grace.
peccatorum."
"If the term Gospel is taken for the whole doctrine of Christ, it is rightly
said and written that the Gospel is a preaching of repentance and the
forgiveness of sins."
5. Ubicunque evangelio opponitur doctrina legis, ibi certum est, evangelii
appellatione doctrinam gratiae intelligi.
Wherever the doctrine of the Law is set in opposition to the Gospel, it
is certain that by the name of the Gospel the doctrine of grace is to be
understood.
