editions of 1812 and 1815) — but also, besides the timetable of the history
of philosophy from Thales down to Jacobi's death, an alphabetical index of
the names of the philosophers, of the historians of philosophy, and of the
views that have emerged, by which aid one can find and survey the material
given without effort. The book contains 16 pages of preface and table of
contents and 524 pages of text, to which are added 23 pages for the
timetable and 15 pages for the index of names. It occurs frequently in
antiquarian catalogues.

For all branches of philosophy we still urgently recommend the following
work: "Philosophical Lexicon by Johann Georg Walch. 2nd edition. Leipzig
1733." 8vo. The rich content of this lexicon is given by its full title as
follows: "Wherein the matters and technical terms occurring in all branches
of philosophy — logic, metaphysics, physics, pneumatics, ethics, natural
theology and jurisprudence, as well as politics — are explained and
elucidated from history, the controversies of the older and more recent
philosophers are recounted, the writings and books belonging thereto are
cited, and everything is presented in alphabetical order." What the
profoundly learned and devout author — whom we have already come to know
elsewhere in this library — promises here, he has honestly kept and
performed. All the various disciplines, both of theoretical and of
practical philosophy, so far as they had already been treated in the
author's time, are presented here in nuce (in a concentrated extract), the
subjects and concepts occurring therein are defined, the various opinions
about them are cited and assessed, the termini technici (technical
expressions) customary in the individual branches — which often cause the
reader of older writings no small embarrassment — are explained, and the
relevant literature is communicated in its proper place, and this with as
great acuity as holy reverence before the revealed divine truth. The
benefit a theologian may draw from this work is obvious. We regard as of
particular importance the discussions it contains of the matters belonging
to natural theology and morals, as well as to natural law. Yet we do not
like to single out anything from this work, since we fear doing so at the
expense of its other content, equally useful in its own field. The first
edition appeared in 1726. The second (which we possess) differs from it
both through some additions in the text and through the addition of a list
of the Latin words with their German translation and short biographies of
the philosophers, likewise in alphabetical order. Both editions contain a
detailed index of subjects and of persons for the easy finding of what is
covered under general headings. The work comprises, in lexicon format,
after a detailed preface, over 1500 pages, not counting the index.
