320 — Kirchlich-Zeitgeschichtliches.
statt. J. u.

320 — Church and Contemporary History.
...took place. The result of it was a petition of theirs to the Supreme Church Council, in which, among other things, it was demanded that the Pomeranian Church Order of 1563 be recognized as a "fundamental law." Upon this there followed, in turn, a counter-petition from several Pomeranian pastors and patrons, to the effect that the Supreme Church Council should, in view of certain statements made by the provincial church leadership, give reassuring declarations concerning the continued existence of the Union in Pomerania. To this the Supreme Church Council in Berlin replied on the 18th of May of this year, among other things, as follows: "In a report before us, the Royal Consistory notes that, with few exceptions, all congregations of the province are to be regarded as united. Hence that statement which struck you as remarkable, according to which only a single united congregation was said to exist in the province, cannot refer to the Union in the legal sense of the Cabinet Order of February 28, 1834, but only to the case of a merger of those congregations of differing confession. This is a construction by which the actual state of affairs will be correctly described... We wish to add the remark that it is unfounded when the notion is entertained that the now customary mention of confessional status in confirmations is proof of a tendency directed against the Union. This might be done with some appearance of right, if it were permissible to treat confession and Union as opposites. This, however, is not the case, and we may all the more earnestly wish that this view, already repeatedly expressed, be abandoned, and that trust be placed in the assurance that the Union is not affected by that form of confirmation." — From this open, official declaration it is clear that a preacher who wishes to be Lutheran within the Prussian state church deceives himself, and, whatever concessions he may obtain, remains caught in the net of the Union until he withdraws from it.
J. G. Daumer, who in his earlier works, as is well known, traced Judaism back to the worship of Moloch in a manner as insane as it was blasphemous, and labored to demonstrate in Christianity a restoration of this worship of Moloch, has recently taken refuge in the bosom of the "only Church of salvation." A fitting conclusion to such a career!

Basel. In a report on the religious condition of Basel, communicated by the Reformed "Evangelist" of Tiffin, it is stated: "Basel is actually not Swiss but South German in character; hence not much attention is paid here to differences in doctrine, but people gladly unite in common works of charity; even between the world and the church there is no strict separation, and often the very same ladies who take the most lively part in the mission societies are also the most spirited dancers at balls." A union of right doctrine with false doctrine must, of course, entail a union of the church with the world.
