To Provide Grant to Western Lutheran
Cemetery
Introduction

Western Lutheran Cemetery, Marcus and Lexington, Saint
Louis, Mo., was established in 1865 by Lutherans who comprised
the Zion and Immanuel “Districts” of the Lutheran Church
in St. Louis. About 50 years later Zion Congregation sold its
interest to Immanuel Congregation. A century after the ceme-
tery’s founding, in 1965, members from Immanuel formally
organized themselves as Immanuel Chapel in St. Louis County,
leaving the city congregation responsible for Western Lutheran
Cemetery.

Today, in spite of the determined efforts of the members who
stayed with the city congregation, the cemetery is covered with
weeds and debris and littered with overturned and broken
tombstones.

With only $11,000 in the Cemetery Fund, the Cemetery
Board is not able to provide adequate maintenance. In consulta-
tion with the staff of other local Lutheran cemeteries, it has been
estimated that it would cost approximately $5,000 to put the
cemetery into decent shape. To provide for minimum mainte-
nance thereafter, the Cemetery Fund would have to be in-
creased by at least $50,000.

Among the renowned Lutheran clergymen buried in the
cemetery are Dr. Franz Pieper, former President of the Missouri
Synod (1899 — 1911) and of Concordia Seminary (1887 — 1931), and
Dr. J. F. Buenger.

Resolution

WHEREAS, Western Lutheran Cemetery has served Lutheran
families for more than a century: and

WHEREAS, A well-cared-for cemetery would also be a demon-
stration of respect to the people of the community in which the
cemetery is located; and

WHEREAS, The present limited funds prevent the Cemetery
Board from providing the needed care and maintenance: there-
fore be it

Resolved. That the Synod in convention provide $5,000 for
the renovation of Western Lutheran Cemetery and $50,000 for
increasing the Cemetery Endowment Fund to an amount by
which the earnings would be sufficient to insure continued
proper maintenance.
