Halte was du hast, daß Niemand deine Krone nehme. Offb. 3, 11. (Freimund.)

Such longing and striving for a fixed confession has shown itself gratifyingly at the pastoral conferences held in Paris these last few days. While the rationalist party, represented by a small number of speakers, put forward the claim that the teaching activity of pastors has no boundary other than Holy Scripture, which each may interpret according to his own reason and conscience, the believing members of the conference maintained, on the contrary, that the church cannot possibly be sacrificed to the arbitrary whims of its teachers, and that there are definite truths, clearly taught by the Word of God, from which one cannot depart without falling away from Christianity.

The conference has therefore resolved to confess the principles laid down by Mr. Guizot, the former minister, which may be reduced to the following three:

1) We believe in a supernatural governance of God in the rule of the world.

2) We believe in the divine and supernatural inspiration of Holy Scripture, in its supreme authority in matters of faith.

3) We believe in the eternal deity, in the miraculous birth, as well as in the resurrection, of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the God-man, a Savior and Redeemer of mankind.

These articles of faith may be regarded as the first step of the Reformed Church of France toward returning to its old confessions. To be sure, many false doctrines may still find shelter within the wide bounds which these articles set. But we wish to hope in God that the believing members of the Reformed Church of France will let themselves be led more and more by the Holy Spirit, so as to penetrate into the depths of Holy Scripture, and thus grow up into one faith and knowledge of the Son of God.

But we, for our part, wish humbly to thank the Lord for the precious inheritance which our fathers left us in the Augsburg Confession and the other confessional writings, and with joyful courage of faith we wish to hold fast to the pure Word and Sacrament confessed therein, as the Lord admonishes us to do: Behold, I come quickly. Hold fast what thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Rev. 3:11. (Der Freimund.)

Vetter, Evangelical Lutheran pastor at Jenkau. 1862. 1129 pp. 1¾ Thaler. — We mention this edition of the old and excellent Büchner not so much in order to recommend it, as to warn against it. According to the preface, this concordance has, namely, in the
