134 Der Bund der Schwesterkirchen.

(Gerh.) — Celibacy is not, absolutely and in itself, a good work.
The unmarried state is not, simply and in itself, a good work.
(Gerh.) — Celibacy is to be approved only in persons suited to it.
The unmarried state is to be approved only in persons fitted for it.
(Wandalinus.) — Vows of celibacy, as never commanded by God, are thus a self-chosen worship (ἐθελοθρησκεία), indeed impious and foolish.
The vows of celibacy, as they were never commanded by God, are accordingly a self-chosen form of worship, indeed godless and foolish.
84. Quod male juratur, pejus servatur. (Wandalinus.) — What is sworn wrongly is kept still worse.
What is sinfully sworn is kept still more sinfully.
(Gerh.) — Woman was not formed from the feet of man, lest she be regarded by him as a footstool; nor was she formed from his head, lest dominion over the man be granted to her; but she was taken from his side, that is, from the vicinity of his heart, so that the man might love her as a part of his own body and a partner of the same nature.
The woman is not formed from the man's feet, so that she should not be held by him to be his footstool; neither is she formed from his head, so that dominion over the man should not be granted to her; but from his side, that is, from the vicinity of his heart, she has been taken, so that the man should love her as a part of his own body and as a fellow-partaker of his nature.

The League of the Sister Churches,
proposed in a church newspaper, with the motto:
"A thaler is equal to thirty silver groschen. So the Roman church is equal to the Lutheran; the Lutheran equal to the Reformed; the Reformed equal to the Greek Catholic, etc."
A widely circulated organ of the United church of Germany, the well-known evangelical church newspaper of Hengstenberg — which had already, here and there in the past, let a not-unclear flirtation with the Catholic church be noticed, a thing that must have pained a Lutheran to the soul — contains, in the October number of last year, No. 79, a second article which, in discussing a book written by Dietlein entitled "Evangelical Ave Maria," expresses itself on the Catholicizing tendency. This article concludes — although in what precedes it denies to the Catholic church the right preaching, the right confession, and the right doctrine of justification and of sin — remarkably enough, as follows:
"If we are to draw the conclusion, it can be no other than this: to the Catholic church there also belongs the evangelical; or one may equally say the reverse: to the evangelical church there also belongs the Catholic. The Roman Catholic church is a sister of the Wittenberg-Catholic church; the papal church cannot do without the Lutheran, and the—
