Zur Geschichte des Hannoverschen Katechismusstreits. 47

Schrift in allen Stücken gemäßen Glaubens.

Toward the History of the Hanoverian Catechism Controversy. 47

(Id.)

We have not separated ourselves from the Roman Church by the Reformation either; rather we have only put away the evil adhering to it, namely the papacy.

(Calov.)

A distinction must be made between what still remains catholic in the Roman religion, and what is papistic and descends from the pope.

(Id.)

We are not opposed to the church of the Romanists being given the name "catholic," insofar as, along with the rest of the truly faithful everywhere, it teaches some chief articles of the faith and partly uses the sacraments as they do — but not that it is catholic in the sense of possessing the whole faith, agreeing with holy Scripture in every point.

54. God preserves His saints even in the midst of error. (Luther.)

55. Error annorum centum non valet momentum.

An error may have stood for a hundred years; that gives it no validity for a single moment.

56. Vetustas sine veritate nihil nisi inveteratus error. (Cyprian.)

Age without truth is nothing but an inveterate error.

(Dannhauer.)

It is vain to boast of age, from which the truth of a church is inferred in the same way as a claim to heaven would be inferred from Belial.

Toward the History of the Hanoverian Catechism Controversy.

On the 7th of October of last year a pastoral conference was held at Celle by the Hanoverian rationalist "clergy," the purpose of which was to set sail at once with the favorable wind that has been blowing for them since the withdrawal of the royal decree concerning the new catechism. The conference then published the following as the outcome of its proceedings:

"The evangelical Church of our narrower fatherland has at present come, in its constitution and in its standing toward the world, into a lamentable condition that urgently demands thorough remedy. In the deepest pain over this, but animated by the pure wish, in
