A. wie folgt:

belongs to God alone, to lies and to the devil. That is the true idolatry and
blasphemy of God, found through and through in all the prophets, as in Isaiah
2:8, Jeremiah 29:31, etc." And p. 154: "There is a great difference between a
lie of mere deed and a lie of doctrine, and yet a further difference between a
bare lie of doctrine without God's Word and a lie of doctrine adorned with
God's Word. For whoever thus lies in doctrine so that he brings God's Word to
bear on it makes the devil into God and God into the devil, as though God
spoke the devil's lies, and thereby seduces me into honoring and worshiping
the devil under God's name and holding the lie for truth." But how can this
abominable idolatry be destroyed otherwise, how can the pure gospel be
preserved for the world otherwise, than through testimony against the lie?
Therefore may the Lord bless all such testimony, and in particular lead his
American Church, in all its parts and members, ever more by his Spirit into
all truth! S.

On Löhe's Tract:
The Rose Months of Holy Women.

Of this tract a second review is found in the Erlangen periodical. Although
"Lehre und Wehre" has already communicated the first of these, we cannot
refrain from communicating to our readers something from this second one as
well, which should serve admirably not only for a right judgment of the
tendency of Löhe's that makes itself known in the tract, but also, more
generally, as a warning against the false tendency of our time on the part of
the "believing."

In that review it says, among other things, as follows:

At a crossroads many another besides the present writer will likely find
himself placed by W. Löhe's little book: "Rose Months of Holy Women." And the
scruple, whether one had not better settle this quietly for oneself, vanishes
on the consideration that it is a duty not to let others silently enter upon
questionable paths. For the book is intended, in the first place, for those in
whom, by reason of age and sex, maturity of judgment cannot unconditionally be
presupposed. It was occasioned by the interests of the female sisterhood of
the deaconesses, and is meant to be read by "women and maidens in the quiet
morning, say before or after breakfast, before one takes up the day's work."
It is meant to be "morning lessons for women and maidens."

We accordingly expect to be shown in this book images which, on the narrow
path to eternal life, serve as admonition and strengthening to the souls that
love Christ. That we shall not find here merely things worthy of imitation
seems to be prepared for by the preface itself. For there it speaks (p. XIV)
of "well-known self-chosen ways of sanctification," which reach "far back
into the first centuries and
