Instruction Against Doubt of the Divine Word and Its Truth. 237

...indeed, certainly the Word of the eternal, living God, and accordingly must in every respect be a truthful Word.

Finally, and twelfthly, the truth of this holy, divine Word is confirmed by daily plain evidence, when men find visibly and palpably, in fact, that it is true and is fulfilled before their eyes, whatever this same Word, Holy Scripture, proclaims, or that things come to pass just as they are described in this Book of the Bible. In further explanation and proof of this I speak with the ancient teacher Hilary, book 3, On the Trinity: All the created works in the whole world could be our witnesses that it is not fitting to doubt divine things (and accordingly this holy Word of God). Let one look upon the heaven, sun, moon, stars, earth, mountains, hills, the fruits of the earth, trees, sea, fish, seafaring, the birds under heaven, and the like, and compare it with this Book of the holy Bible, and one will see and note (beyond the mere recollection and sense of their creation) that the governance of all these things comes to pass, under the mighty hand of God, just as this Scripture proclaims and describes. The heaven, together with the sun, moon, and stars, has its own manner, motion, course, time, rising and setting; likewise clouds, winds, lightning, thunder, rain, drought, and whatever else there may be of this kind, in every way just as this Book indicates, and can be most exactly consistent with the same, as for example: Gen. 1:14, Ps. 104:2, 19, Job 9:7, Ps. 107:25, Ps. 148:6, Ps. 157:7, Jer. 10:3, etc. So too the earth, with its fruits and increase in ore, vine-growth, agriculture, grain, cattle, animals, and whatever else may be so named: Deut. 8:9, 28:3-4, etc., Ps. 107:23, 27, Job 28:2, Deut. 11:14. Thereafter, let one further consider man himself, and observe how he, by means of the almighty hand and the singular blessing of God, has obtained and continues to have his life and its care, from his mother's womb onward, through the conception and birth given by his beloved parents: Gen. 1:28, Ps. 127:3, 51:7, 22:10, 128:3-4. And in particular let one take diligent and careful note how, with respect to this holy Word of God, corrupted nature (alas) so entirely agrees with what it is accused of therein — namely, that the imagination and inclination of the heart is bent toward evil, Gen. 6:5, 8:21; that nothing good dwells in the flesh, Rom. 7:18; that we are all unfit and fall short of the glory of God, Rom. 3:12, 19, 23, Ps. 14:3. Behold, this is what the Word of God the Lord describes, and we find it, alas, more than all too true. Moreover, Scripture says that man, on account of sin, must die the death, Rom. 5:12, and has no continuing city here, Heb. 13:14, but that rich and poor, high and low, young and old, without distinction, must depart from it, Job 3:16, 15:33, Jer. 17:11, Hab. 3:5. That this is true is given by plain evidence, and Holy Scripture confirms it therein. To this, moreover, could also be added — without even needing to — the whole of man with his entire condition, and whatever is in the wide world (were one to wish to set it forth at length), abundantly enough to establish the truthful ground of this matter.
