64 Kirchlich-Zeitgeschichtliches.

64 Church-Contemporary Matters.
...to 4,016; in St. Thomas, out of 13,666, to 2,281; and in St. Johns, out
of 2,228, to 99. According to the (not yet published) census of 1856,
the population of St. Thomas has diminished by 4,106 (as a result of the
cholera in the year 1853), and all church communions have lost in
membership: the Lutherans 131, with the exception of the Episcopalians,
who (as a result of immigration from the English islands) have grown by
561.
Württemberg. At the last diocesan synod held in Stuttgart it was
resolved, among other things, that "for the present one should refrain
from the general introduction of a proper church discipline, whose order
must develop out of the inner life of the church itself — however
desirable it may be that already now, on the part of the higher church
authority, everything be done that seems advisable toward preparing the
way for it, namely through a considerate and protective treatment of
those clergy and parish church councils who have the opportunity and the
eagerness to further the matter in their congregations, as well as
through a general exhortation that the local institutions and customs
for positive church discipline still existing here and there in
individual congregations be well preserved and cultivated, and finally
through the use of the experience — yet to be awaited — of the
impression made by the application of disciplinary measures here and
there."
German Church Conditions. The following is written by a Lutheran from
Germany, under the date of September 26 of last year, to a preacher of
our synod: "You have something inestimable ahead of us — a clear church
fellowship — while among us, even in the narrower circle of confessors
of the Lutheran faith, one clouded state of affairs after another
continually and disturbingly intrudes. With few notable exceptions, such
as Harless, Thomasius, and Philippi, our leading lights and would-be
leading lights have a prevailing inclination to go beyond the symbolical
books, in that they now take something away from them, now add
something to them, and thus also formally forget that, though they are
indeed only a norma normata, yet as normata they are at the same time
normans; and they treat them as a norma normanda, in keeping with the
advances of more recent scriptural scholarship and deeper dogmatic
research — as, for example, in the doctrine of the Lord's Supper, where
not the forgiveness of sins but the unio mystica sacramentalis of the
communicants with Christ is supposed to be the main point; and in the
well-known controversies over the efficacy of the means of grace, as
well as over the condition and manner of this efficacy, which link up
with the controversy over church and ministry. Thus the whole way of
salvation, and in particular the doctrine of justification, and, in
consequence of it, the daily repentance of the right kind, is, as it
were, wrapped in a haze of false doctrine, in which all sorts of little
human sins flicker about and fly into one's spiritual eye, so that one
simply cannot get done with wiping them away. In that case it is indeed
not easy, in the right way, to maintain fellowship, in the right way to
bear and tacitly tolerate, and yet also, in right love, to rebuke —
especially since in this latter respect one falls into a vicious circle,
since there prevails an inclination to regard not the rebuke itself but
the person of the one rebuking, and to deny to the non-theologian, in a
half-Roman manner, at least tacitly, any competence to do so, even
though this is not everywhere allowed to become loudly stated. The whole
matter feels to me as though one did not give to the Word of God itself
the honor due it, but only to certain actions in which the Word works —
sacrament, preaching from the pulpit and from the mouth of an ordained
man or at least a theologian — in short, as if one set certain channels
of the Word above the Word itself. Nonetheless, orthodoxy and
Lutheranism gain ever more ground, even though it cannot be foreseen how
far the one, as well as the other, will shrink together, should it once
come to a season of severe visitation and sifting.
My wife and I live, with few exceptions, quite withdrawn to ourselves.
We rejoice greatly that we are wholly one in spirit with you, as we find
confirmed again and again from "Lehre und Wehre" and from the
"Lutheraner.""
