The Society in Mecklenburg.

The Präses shared with the Synod the statutes, presented to him by
Pastor Wolter, of a "Society for the Relief of the Distress of the Lutheran
Church among the German Emigrants in North America," which was formed last
year in Mecklenburg, and whose purpose, as its name already suggests, is
"to relieve, to the best of its ability, the ecclesiastical distress among
the German emigrants in North America belonging to the Lutheran church,
both by sending pastors and schoolteachers and by supporting the
institutions already established, or still to be established, there for
the same church purpose."

The current board of this society: Deacon Karsten, chairman; Professor
Dr. Delitzsch, secretary; Professor Becker, treasurer; Professor Krabbe;
Supreme Court Councilor von Schröter.

The Synod resolved to express, through its correspondent with foreign
countries, its joy over the founding of this society to the society's
board.

The board of the society, as well as Pastor Löhe, are each to be sent
10 free copies of the "Lutheraner," through the mediation of Pastor Brohm.

Agent for Lutheran Emigrants in Bremen.

Through a letter from Pastor A. Hoyer, the Synod received word that the
Ev. Lutheran candidate Schäfer had settled in Bremen at the beginning of
this spring, with the intention of drawing near, with exhortation,
correction, and comfort, to emigrating Lutherans — whether gathered into
groups by friends in Bavaria, or recommended to him by individual pastors
in Germany — and so forth. It was especially noted that candidate Schäfer
wished that the Ev. Lutheran pastors in North America would provide him
information on everything in their state — church, congregation,
household, and families — in church matters and every other respect
possible, whether through the mediation of Pastor A. Hoyer in Baltimore, or
directly to himself at the address: Mr. Candidate Schäfer, Bremen,
Osterstrasse No. 48, Neustadt.

The Seminary at Fort Wayne.

In response to the question put in writing to Pastor Löhe last year, on
the Synod's instructions, from Chicago, as to whether the founders of the
above institution were willing to formally transfer it to the Synod's free
disposal, a favorable reply had been received from him in the course of the
year. The Präses had already informed the Synod of this in the first
sessions and had appointed a committee to draft statutes for this
institution.

As a result, the seminary's current teachers, Pastor Dr. W. Sihler and
Pastor A. Wolter, submitted written petitions to the Synod expressing the
wish that the Synod call other teachers to the seminary in their place.

The Synod, however, was unanimously of the opinion that it had no right
whatsoever, upon taking over the seminary, to declare the call of its
current teachers invalid, and that it moreover, for the internal and
external...
