Eckhardt's Homiletisches Reallexikon, 1907–1917

A cumulative subject index to seven Missouri Synod periodicals, compiled by E. (Ernest) Eckhardt (1868–1939) and printed at St. Louis between 1907 and 1917. Under each headword it sets numbered theses, and beside each thesis the places where the periodicals had treated it — by volume and page, running twenty years past the last of Der Lutheraner's own registers. Where the archive holds the volume a citation names, the citation below is a link to that page.

The alphabetical run is here in full, Abendmahl through Wunder, assembled from five scans: two archive.org items, a pair from Google Books that closes what had looked like a gap in the middle of the alphabet, and the archive.org tail. With it are the Beichtreden appendix, Eckhardt's own printed Register, and the separate 1913 treatise Die Schule, bound in with the later volumes and kept here under its own heading.

clear

Headwords are spelled as Eckhardt set them, so the filter folds the differences that would otherwise hide them — Sklaverei finds Sclaverei, Konkordienformel finds Concordienformel. What you see listed is always the printed spelling.

4,478 entries under 828 headwords, carrying 129,203 citations and 2,331 fragments too damaged to read · built 2026-09-16. uncorrected OCR

The German below is machine transcription of the 1907–1917 print (tesseract, Fraktur model) and has not been proof-read against the page. Read it as a finding aid: the citations are what it is for, and a garbled word is a defect of our OCR, not of Eckhardt.

Chiliasm and the Augsburg Confession. § 8. Division. Chiliasm is divided into gross and refined chiliasm. Note. Pfeifer divides chiliasm into three classes: the grossest, the gross, and the subtle. A. Refined chiliasm is only a hope for better times (Spener), a state of blessedness for the church that is still to be expected. Pfeifer. Such chiliasm is 1. indeed false and erroneous, for Scripture testifies that the last times will be terrible times; Note. Every opinion about the future of the church which is not satisfied with Christ's present kingdom of the cross, and prophesies for the future a greater spiritual glory on earth than it now has, is Jewish doctrine; 2. but not in itself church-divisive. If someone holds such chiliasm as a private opinion, while otherwise leaving wholly and entirely intact the doctrine of the cross of Christians, of the constant expectation of the last day, and of the general resurrection of the dead on the last day, then we do not wish to condemn him for it or break off church fellowship with him. Note a. Someone could, for instance, without prejudice to other articles of faith, cherish the hope that the Synodical Conference of this country would someday unite all Lutheran synods within itself, or that the gifts for the mission work would someday flow in great abundance. That would be optimistic, but not heretical. Note. Such chiliasm scarcely deserves the name chiliasm. B. Gross chiliasm 1. teaches a twofold day of the Lord yet to come, a twofold return of Christ, and a twofold resurrection; 2. dreams of a comfortable life of eating, drinking, merrymaking, great honey-cakes, as great lords; 3. is mostly connected with a general conversion of the Jews. Note a. Description of gross chiliasm: Christ will come a thousand years before the last day and raise his believers, at least the martyrs, put the Antichrist to death, bind the devil, and set up a glorious kingdom on earth where there will be nothing but rest and peace. Note b. In this the chiliasts are of course not agreed among themselves. The fact that chiliasm has almost as many forms as advocates proves how uncertain the scriptural basis of this doctrine is. Note c. The gross chiliasts let fall the distinction between the spiritual and the carnal, between spiritualism and carnalism. They have begun in the Spirit; they want to finish in the flesh. Note d. The kingdom of Christ is supposed to have its victory in the thousand-year kingdom. — Does it not have the victory already, even when it seems to succumb before the world and the martyrs must give up their lives?

By the return of Christ a thousand years before the last day is to be understood a visible, transient, momentary appearance (Epiphaneia). Koll. 19.23.29. Unt. 34. Deindörfer: L. W. 48, 46. Note a. In doing so they wish to reject every doctrine of the thousand-year kingdom which 1. stands in contradiction to justification by grace alone, to the order of salvation and to the nature of the church; 2. makes the thousand-year kingdom into an outwardly earthly world-empire. Note b. These false opinions 1. are indeed not a synodical doctrine within the Iowa Synod, not a condition of membership, 2. but are recognized as having equal right with the truth, are not treated as church-divisive, are found to be quite compatible with Lutheran orthodoxy. An open question. Note c. In the year 1893 Ohio and Iowa agreed that the assumption that Rev. 20 is still to be expected as future, and that the resurrection prophesied in Rev. 20 is a bodily resurrection of individuals, is indeed not in contradiction with the analogy of faith, but cannot be strictly proven from Scripture. A visible return of Christ before the last day for the destruction of the Antichrist is against the analogy of faith. Toledo Union Theses 1907. Summary. Chiliasm is widespread. "Nowadays there is scarcely a believing Christian to be found who does not share the chiliastic views." Delitzsch. — Yet it has since lost more and more ground and is becoming disreputable in the Lutheran church. Note a. The modern church, school, science, the modern state, modern society, family, the whole intercourse of the world in religious, ecclesiastical, political, moral and social respects is chiliastic. Note b. Chiliastic dreams find entry far more easily than the truth. Note c. Every human being is a born chiliast, and it takes a long cure to get rid of chiliasm thoroughly. Objection. I believe in a thousand-year kingdom. But I do not preach about it. — Do you not trust your doctrine to be useful, or are you not certain of your doctrine?

Vers 18. Hoſ. 2, 18: Ich will Bogen, Schwert und Krieg vom Lande zerbrechen, und will ſie ſicher wohnen laſſen. Ap. 3, 20. 21. Die Wiederherſtellung der Dinge. Anm. a. 2. Sam. 7, 12. 13. Pſ. 89, 2—5, 132, 11. — Chriſtus, der König, ſitzt zur Rechten Gottes. Hebr. 8, 1. b. Ap. 15, 15—17. Matth. 4, 17. Das Himmelreich iſt nahe herbeigekommen. Luk. 17, 21. inwendig in euch. c. Der Wiederaufbau des Tempels, des Hauſes des Herrn. Sach. 6, 12. Jer. 3, 19. Luk. 2, 14. Friede auf Erden. Eph. 2, 14. Chriſtus iſt unſer Friede Röm. 5, 1. Wir haben Frieden mit Gott. i. Die BVezähmung der wilden Tiere. Jeſ. 11. 6—8. Die Wölfe werden bei den Lämmern liegen. Vers 9. Denn das Land iſt voll Erkenntnis. Erfüllung: die Bekehrung der Heiden. k. Die Herrlichkeit des meſſianiſchen eiches Jo, 35, 6. 7. Waſſerſtröme, fruchtbares Land. Joel 3, 23. Wein und Milch. Pſ. 72, 16. Dickes Getreide. Jeſ. 60, 17. Gold, Silber, Erz. Jeſ. 61. 3 ſchöne Kleider. Jeſ. 25, 6. ein fettes Mahl. Erfüllung: Luk. 14. 16. Das große Abendmahl. Matth. 22, 1. Die Hochzeit. l. Das Gericht über die Feinde. Joel 3, 1—5. Anm. a.

3. The chiliasts appeal a. to Bible passages, such as the following: Rev. 20:4: the souls of the beheaded — lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. Isa. 2:2: In the last days the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established higher than all the mountains, etc. — Verse 3 gives the reason: for out of Zion shall go forth the law. Cf. Luke 24:47: beginning at Jerusalem. Isa. 11:6: The wolves shall dwell with the lambs, etc. — Cf. Luke 2:14: Peace on earth. Isa. 65:17—25. I will create a new heaven and a new earth. Jer. 33:14—18: And there shall be a king who shall reign well and shall establish justice and righteousness on earth. — But not for 1000 years, rather forever. Verse 18. Hos. 2:18: I will break the bow, the sword, and war out of the land, and will make them dwell securely. — Verse 19, however: "I will betroth you to me forever," points to the spiritual peace, the covenant of a good conscience with God. Amos 9:11: I will raise up again the fallen tabernacle of David. — Acts 15:14—16 shows that this has long since begun to be fulfilled, and continues to be fulfilled again and again. Matt. 26:29: until the day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. John 10:16: And there shall be one flock and one shepherd. Acts 1:6.7. The restoration of the kingdom of Israel. Here the Lord did not rebuke the hope for such a time, only they should not know the time and the hour. Acts 3:20.21. The restoration of all things. Note a. The chiliasts think the church has, in the course of time, progressed step by step to greater perfection and deeper knowledge, that they understand prophecy better now than formerly. Note b. The Gospel is supposed still to unfold its power among people. A new Gospel will do it, better than the old one. — Then the world does not now contradict the Gospel because it is the world, but because salvation is not offered to it as it will be in that future kingdom. Note c. The chiliasts pay attention neither to the words, nor to the context and parallelism of Scripture; b. to the fathers: L. W. 18, 97—111. Dannhauer. — Yet the passage in question here is probably spurious. Selnecker. L. W. 18, 74. — Nevertheless he was an anti-chiliast. L. W. 14, 234. Note. Selnecker also held the peculiar opinion that Christ raises up several of his own every year. — But establishing individual exceptions would not overturn the rule. Luther. That Luther too is supposed to have been a bit chiliastic is said to follow from the words: Joseph desired to be counted among those who would be raised with Christ. Also, Luther is said to have kept table fellowship with Capito, a chiliast. — But the latter only after Capito had confessed the Augsburg Confession and the Apology. Note. Their conclusion is: If earlier some fathers (Tertullian, Justin, etc., see § 2) taught chiliastically without being condemned, then it must also be permitted now. Or: If you condemn us for chiliasm, you must also condemn the fathers. — Against this it should be noted: 1. These fathers were, in their time, convinced of their error by no one and held to it out of weakness, without overturning the foundation of doctrine. Had anyone in their time testified against chiliasm, they might have let chiliasm fall, like Coracion. A distinction must be made between weakness and willful error. We avoid their errors without condemning the fathers themselves. 2. To appeal to the fathers for one's chiliasm is also a dubious thing, because a great many fathers have rejected chiliasm. II. Chiliasm stands in contradiction to the true sense of the prophecies. The prophecies are fulfilled: a. The sitting on David's throne. 2 Sam. 7:12.13. Ps. 89:2—5, 132:11. — Christ, the King, sits at the right hand of God. Heb. 8:1. b. The restoration of the kingdom of Israel. Amos 9:11.12 is the establishment of the New Testament covenant. Acts 15:15—17. Matt. 4:17. The kingdom of heaven has come near. Luke 17:21: within you. c. The rebuilding of the Temple, the house of the Lord. Zech. 6:12. Ezek. 40—48 is the building of the New Testament church. Eph. 2:19—22: in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows, etc. d. The building up of Jerusalem. Micah 7:11: Your walls shall be built. Zech. 2:4: Jerusalem shall be inhabited without walls, because of the great multitude of people within it. The fulfillment: Gal. 4:26: The Jerusalem that is above — she is the mother of us all. Israel's rule over the heathen. Isa. 60:21: Your people shall all be righteous and shall possess the land forever. Jer. 3:19: How I would give you so many children. Isa. 60:3: The Gentiles shall walk in your light. The fulfillment: Rom. 11:17.18: you, who were a wild olive tree, have been grafted in among them. The preaching of the Gospel and its reception throughout the whole world. — Rom. 10:18: Their sound has gone out into all the world. 1 Tim. 3:16: believed on in the world. g. The time of glory. Isa. 49:8: the acceptable time, the day of salvation. Isa. 61:2: the acceptable year. Luke 4:21: Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your ears. 2 Cor. 6:2: now is the day of salvation. h. The time of peace. Ps. 72:7: great peace, until the moon is no more. Isa. 9:7: and of peace there shall be no end. All war with tumult and garments rolled in blood shall be burned. Fulfillment: Luke 2:14: Peace on earth. Eph. 2:14: Christ is our peace. Rom. 5:1: We have peace with God. i. The taming of the wild beasts. Isa. 11:6—8: The wolves shall lie down with the lambs. Verse 9: For the land is full of the knowledge of the LORD. Fulfillment: the conversion of the heathen. k. The glory of the messianic kingdom. Isa. 35:6.7: streams of water, fruitful land. Joel 3:23: wine and milk. Ps. 72:16: abundant grain. Isa. 60:17: gold, silver, bronze. Isa. 61:3: beautiful garments. Isa. 25:6: a rich feast. Fulfillment: Luke 14:16: The great supper. Matt. 22:1: The wedding. l. The judgment upon the enemies. Joel 3:1—5: the great and terrible day of the LORD. Isa. 2:4: He will judge among the nations. Isa. 61:2: a day of vengeance of our God. Fulfillment: John 9:39: I have come into this world for judgment. John 3:18.19: He who does not believe is condemned already. John 12:31: Now is the judgment of this world. Note a. We understand all these prophecies of the New Testament era. Note b. The last time is the whole time of the New Testament. Note c. The chiliasts declare many prophecies to be unfulfilled, of which Scripture itself says that they have been fulfilled.

Auslegung von Off. 20. Luth. 24, W. 88. 18. 123. Eb. 128. Brun. Antichriſt 51—57. Auslegung von Röbbelen. Luth. 16, 108. Anm. Off. 20 ſei klar. L. W. 48, 46.) a. Die Bindung des Sataus. Off. 2 11. Der Fürſt dieſer Welt iſt gerichtet. Chriſtus hat den Teufel überwunden. Anm. Matth.

5. Chiliasm is in contradiction with the wording of Rev. 20. Interpretation of the preceding 19th chapter: the church of Christ will conquer the world and the Antichrist with the sword of the Word of God. Interpretation of Rev. 20. Luth. 24, 123. W. 88, 18. Eb. 128. Brun. Antichrist 51—57. Interpretation by Röbbelen. Luth. 16, 108. Note. Rev. 20 is a dark passage and no sedes doctrinae, therefore it must be interpreted according to the analogy of faith, that is, according to the bright, clear sayings of Scripture. (Deindörfer holds that Rev. 20 is clear. L. W. 48, 46.) a. The binding of Satan. John 16:11: The ruler of this world is judged. Christ has overcome the devil. Note. The addition is also to be noted: that he should no longer deceive the nations. V. 3, i.e., that he can no longer hinder the conversion of the heathen. b. A thousand years. V. 3 and 4. This is a prophetic number. That these must be calendar years cannot be proven. c. The souls will reign. V. 4. Here only souls are spoken of. Indeed Scripture often understands by "souls" the whole person, e.g., Gen. 46:15: 33 souls. But that cannot apply here, because the qualification is added: souls of the beheaded. d. The souls of the beheaded, and those who had not worshiped the beast. These are all to whom Scripture ascribes the reigning. If only the martyrs are to be understood by this, how can the chiliasts hope that they too may reign with them! They would first have to have their heads cut off, at the very least. e. to reign with Christ. Until the last day Christ will rule in the midst of his enemies. Ps. 110. Note 1. Where this reigning takes place, the text does not say. The chiliasts add: on earth. Since, however, only souls are spoken of, we conclude rather on a reigning in heaven. While the church militant here on earth carries out its work, the church triumphant above is already singing its songs of victory. Note 2. How will they reign? Nothing is said of a visible reigning. Since they reign with Christ, we conclude a spiritual reign. f. This (namely this living and reigning of the souls with Christ) is the first resurrection. Here only a spiritual resurrection can be meant, the conversion or translation of the souls of the godly into the heavenly state and life. Note 1. Of a spiritual resurrection, a resurrection of the soul, Scripture speaks often: Luke 2:34: set for the rising of many in Israel. Eph. 5:14: rise from the dead. Col. 3:1: risen with Christ. Col. 2:12: you are risen through faith. This first resurrection already began in Christ's time, John 5:25: the hour is coming, and now is. Note 2. John says: "This is the first resurrection," well known to you from Christ's own sayings; also, this is the same apostle who wrote John 5:25, to whom therefore the image of a spiritual resurrection was familiar. Note 3. Testimonies that a spiritual resurrection of the soul is meant here: Ambrose. Calov. Augustine. (The thousand-year kingdom is the Christian church.) L. W. 15, 105—107, 110. Note 4. Could the first resurrection possibly mean the one named in Matt. 27:52? No, since the description in Rev. 20 in no way fits Matt. 27:52. g. The rest of the dead (the spiritually dead. Matt. 8:22) did not come to life again, remained in death. Verse 5. h. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over him the second death has no power. He will live, though he die. John 5:25. Note. These words, "Blessed is he," "they shall be priests of God and of Christ" (cf. Rev. 1:6, 5:10) suggest the supposition that here all the faithful departed are meant. Is this prophecy of Rev. 20 already fulfilled, or is the fulfillment still to be expected in the future? 1. We believe that it is already fulfilled and means nothing other than this: the Christians have, despite all persecution, conquered and reigned with Christ in faith; or: while the believers, even in their death, live and reign with Christ, it is quite otherwise with the godless — they really die. Luther: the fulfillment began when the revelation was given. The life of believers with Christ can begin with the conversion of a person. Note. Three different opinions have been expressed in our Lutheran church: the thousand-year kingdom begins 1. with Christ's resurrection (Luther); 2. with Constantine the Great (Gerhard); 3. with the Reformation. 2. From the prophecy itself it cannot be proven with irrefutable certainty whether it is still to be fulfilled, or is already fulfilled, or is being fulfilled continually. 3. If anyone thinks the fulfillment possibly still lies in the future, we do not wish to condemn him for that, so long as he does not otherwise overturn other articles of faith. Such an assumption does not damage the faith. Note. Although we believe that the last day can come today, we nevertheless leave open the possibility that a thousand more years might yet pass over it. 4. But if anyone teaches that it is certain that this prophecy is still to be fulfilled and that the thousand years are definitely still to be expected, then the foundation of the faith is thereby shaken.

Platz (Kahnis.) Einwand. Hier muß man das Offenb. 20 Geſagte einſchieben. Ebart. Anm. a. Die Kirche wird auch immer unſichtbar bleiben. Matth. Einwand a. 6. Chiliasm is against the analogy of faith concerning the coming of Christ, concerning the kingdom of Christ, and concerning the resurrection. a. The return of Christ. 1. There is no prophecy of a visible return of Christ for the thousand-year kingdom. 2. Scripture knows only of a twofold visible coming of Christ, the first his coming in the flesh, the second to judgment. Heb. 9:28: he will appear a second time for salvation. 3. When Christ returns, then the end comes. Matt. 24:3: the sign of your coming and of the end of the age. 1 Cor. 15:23.24: when he comes, then the end. Matt. 25:31—46: but when the Son of Man comes in his glory, then follows the judgment. 2 Pet. 3:10: but the day of the Lord will come, in which the heavens will pass away. The 2nd Article: from thence he will come to judge. There is no room here for a thousand-year kingdom (Kahnis). Objection. Here one must insert what is said in Rev. 20. Ebart. — The chiliasts tear the passages apart and insert the thousand-year kingdom wherever it suits them. They want the clear passages of Scripture interpreted according to the obscure Revelation. Note. One forms the notion that Christ dwells a thousand years on earth, and cites such prophecies in which the words "eternal" and "without end" occur. How then is the second visible return to take place, if Christ does not depart from the earth? Objection. The first return is only a transient appearance. Iowa. See § 2. b. The nearness of the last day. 1. If at least a thousand more years are inserted between our time and Christ's return, then the last day is still far off. Such a doctrine shakes the foundation of the faith. 2. We are to expect the last day at every moment. Matt. 24:42: Watch, for you know not what hour your Lord will come. Verse 44: at an hour you do not expect. Verse 27: like the lightning. 1 Thess. 5:2: like a thief in the night. Luke 21:35: like a snare. Luke 12:42—44. The parable of the faithful and wise steward. Matt. 24:48—51. The parable of the wicked servant: My lord delays his coming. Examples: Noah's time. Matt. 24:37—39. Lot's time. Luke 17:28—30. 3. After the revelation of the Antichrist, 2 Thess. 2, nothing lies before us but the last day. We are only waiting for the return. The kingdom of Christ. 1. Christ's kingdom is a spiritual kingdom. The church is invisible. Rom. 14:17: The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking. John 18:36: My kingdom is not of this world. Luke 17:20.21: The kingdom of God does not come with outward observation; it is within you. Note a. The church will also always remain invisible. Matt. 13:30.39: Let both grow together until the harvest. The harvest is the end of the age. There is no time on earth when wheat and tares, good and bad fish, sheep and goats are separated from one another. Note b. There can be no talk of ruling and reigning as with worldly princes. "It shall not be so among you." What the chiliasts wish for is precisely what Christ rejects. Note c. When chiliasts therefore dream of a visible kingdom here on earth, that is against the analogy of faith. Note d. Visible glory is incompatible with the nature of the New Testament. Not satisfied with the spiritual goods of the New Testament, the chiliasts long again for the earthly things by which those goods were prefigured. They fall back from the substance of the goods to their shadow. Note e. Therefore chiliasm is also against the nature of faith. Heb. 11:1: not to doubt what one does not see. 2 Cor. 4:18: we who look not at the things that are seen. Faith has to do only with unseen things. 1 Pet. 1:8. John 20:29: not seeing. Objection. Must a kingdom that appears visibly on earth eo ipso also be of this world? 2. Christ's kingdom is a kingdom of the cross. Job 7:1: always in conflict. 14:1: full of unrest. Ps. 34:19: many afflictions. Matt. 6:34: sufficient unto the day is its own trouble. 16:24: take up his cross. Luke 14:27: bear his cross. John 16:33: in the world you have tribulation. Acts 14:22: through much tribulation. Rom. 8:17: if indeed we suffer with him. Matt. 10:22: hated by everyone. John 15:18.19: therefore the world hates you. John 16:2: put you out of the synagogue. Matt. 10:34—36. 2 Tim. 3:12: persecution. 1 Pet. 5:8: the devil goes about like a roaring lion. How does a life in dulci jubilo fit with this? Note. Precisely the last times, too, will be terrible times. 2 Tim. 3:1: a grievous time. Dan. 12:1. Some will depart from the faith, 1 Tim. 4:1—3. No faith on earth, Luke 18:8. Great moral corruption, eating, drinking, marrying, etc. Matt. 24:37—39. Scoffers. 2 Pet. 3:3. Jude 18. Unrighteousness will increase. Matt. 24:12. Famine, pestilence. Luke 21:11. Many false prophets. Matt. 24:4.5. 2 Tim. 4:3.4. 2 Pet. 2:1. Objection. If evil no longer has the upper hand as before, that does not yet mean that Christ's kingdom is now no longer a kingdom of the cross. Note b. What kind of chiliasm it is that is incompatible with the church's kingdom of the cross, let the chiliasts themselves decide. 3. The kingdom of glory. After the believers have tasted blessedness in heaven, are they supposed to come once more to earth, into a land where earthly milk and honey flow! The resurrection of the dead. 1. The resurrection happens on the last day. 1 Thess. 4:14—17. John 6:40.54: raise up on the last day. 11:24: in the resurrection on the last day. 5:28.29: the hour is coming, etc. The 3rd Article: and on the last day will raise up me and all the dead. — Augsburg Confession, Art. 17. 2. The doctrine of a resurrection of the believers or of the martyrs a thousand years beforehand is against the analogy of faith. Objection a. Just as little as the resurrection of some, Matt. 27:52, overturns the doctrine of the general resurrection on the last day, just as little does the resurrection of individuals at the beginning of the thousand-year kingdom. — That God has already raised some up does not abolish the order of the general resurrection; but it is another thing to hope for such a thing still from others. Objection b. 1 Thess. 4:16. The dead in Christ will rise first. — What is reported in the following verse, that we shall be caught up together with them, happens immediately afterward.

7. Chiliasm is dangerous. a. It draws the gaze away from heaven and directs it to the earth. — It would be similar if one wanted to comfort immigrants, whose hearts are set on America, where they have their home, their loved ones, with the prospect of Ellis Island. W. 1903, 77. b. Christians run the danger of undervaluing what they now have in the Word and Sacrament, because they set their hope on something else. Note a. Christians already have everything they need for this life and the next. 1 Cor. 1:1—9: enriched in every way. He who has found peace seeks nothing more in this world. Note b. Precisely the refined chiliasts, who expect not a carnal but a spiritual kingdom of Christ, and thus do not yet have what we in fact already have through faith, fall into contradiction with the doctrine of justification. Note c. Gross chiliasts even seek, through works, to make themselves worthy of the so-called first resurrection. c. Chiliasm leads to false security, since one does not expect the last day for a long time yet. Matt. 24:42. d. If one gets involved in such speculations, one cannot say where one will finally end up. A slippery slope. Example: Kliefoth. Chr. Hofmann and others. Note. Where might many a synod have ended up, if the testimony against chiliasm had fallen silent. e. Chiliasm holds Christians back from the God-pleasing separation from unbelievers, since the Lord himself, it is taught, will soon intervene and lead his own out of Babel. Note. 8. Chiliasm cannot be brought into harmony a. with our Lutheran hymns. Hymn 433, 1: It is surely at hand. 431: We all hope every hour for your coming, Lord Jesus Christ, etc. 279, 10: For the time is not far off, etc. 29, 12.13. 123, 12. Such hymns a chiliast cannot sing; b. with our Lutheran confession. Augsburg Confession, Art. 17. Condemned: that before the resurrection of the dead, the saints alone, the godly, shall have a worldly kingdom. Objection a. Only gross chiliasm is condemned here, which ascribes to Christ's kingdom a worldly form and power. Against this: 1. It is condemned that the godly shall take possession of the kingdom of the world: ubique impiis oppressis — after the godless have everywhere been subjugated. So no such time is in prospect either, where the godless are made subject to the Christians. 2. That refined chiliasm too — the hope of better times for Christians — is thereby condemned: see Gerhard, N. 75, 21. Hengstenberg. O. 71, 45. Seiss. Luth. 25, 11. Objection b. The symbols are to be understood historically. Only the chiliasm of the Reformation period, the Münsterite, Anabaptist kind, is condemned here. — Against this: 1. Certainly the Augsburg Confession is directed especially against the chiliasm of its own time, but not against that alone. The words show this: "and others" (et alios), which also occur now. 2. If the Reformers, at the time of the drafting of the Augsburg Confession, had allowed a Spener-like chiliasm as an open theological question, then one would indeed have to interpret this passage accordingly. But their other writings show that this is not the case. 9. What is to be done with chiliasts? a. Chiliastic preachers, who for the sake of their chiliasm overturn articles of faith, are not to be tolerated in office. They cannot subscribe to the confessions. Note a. Deposed on account of chiliasm were, e.g., Held, Seidenbacher 1661, Immersbach 1666, Schieferdecker, etc. Note b. Chiliasm should have no equal standing with the truth in the church. Even in this regard one may not let everyone believe and teach whatever he wishes. An open question. b. Those who are otherwise devoted to pure doctrine, who in their chiliastic ideas do not overturn any article of faith, do not seek to teach and spread their error, and otherwise show themselves open to instruction — such may well be tolerated. It is another thing to tolerate such an aberration, or to concede it equal standing. Note a. May one maintain pulpit fellowship with a pastor who rejects chiliasm but is still a member of a chiliastic synod, if everything else is in order? — Only if that member is in a state of confession. The time of withdrawal must, under the circumstances, be left to his own conscience. Note b. No pastor may let himself be called to an anti-chiliastic congregation that is still organically bound to a chiliastic synod, without making himself a partaker of the congregation's unionism. Homiletics. 18th Sunday after Trinity. That New Testament Christians have nothing else to wait for than the revelation of Christ on the last day. a. because they already have everything they need for this life and the next, b. because they are certain that God's faithfulness will keep them to the end. 2nd Advent. Gospel.

A citation shown like this names a volume the archive does not hold — most of Der Lutheraner and Lehre und Wehre past Jahrgang 10, and the five other series Eckhardt indexes, none of which are here. Those references are printed as Eckhardt set them rather than hidden: the reference is the useful thing even when we cannot serve the page. Page images of the Reallexikon itself are not served in this build; the scan note under each entry gives the item and image index in the archive.org copy.
