To Declare Ordination of Women Not
Divisive of Fellowship

Word of God does not permit women to hold the pastoral
office or exercise the functions pertaining thereto, according
to 1 Cor. 14:33b-35: 1 Tim. 2:11-12: and

Wuereas, The interpretation of the passage which speaks
of women teaching in the church and usurping authority
over man is not accepted with any consensus in the church:
therefore be it

Resolved, That the Synod declare that ordination of
jvomen to the pastoral office should not he divisive of fel-
lowship; and finally be it

To Continue to Oppose Women’s Ordination

Wuereas, The ALC has approved the ordination of women
into the office of the holy ministry, and has already done
this; and

WHEREAS, The New Testament states clearly and suffi-
ciently that the practice is prohibited, and that the minis-
terial office is to be conferred only upon men: 1 Cor. 14:
26-37; 1 Tim. 2:11-14; 3:2-7; Heb, 13:17; Titus 1:5-9: and

WuHerEaS, Also the doctrine of inspiration and the verity
of Scripture is at stake when it thus is disregarded: and

WHEREAS, At its convention in Milwaukee in 1971 the
LCMS reaffirmed its Position on the matter of women’s or-
dination; therefore be it

Resolved, That we, the members of St. John’s Lutheran
Congregation of Chaska, Minn., in a lawfully called Voters’
Assembly on Feb. 27, 1973, do memorialize the LCMS at its
convention in New Orleans, July 1973, to again reaffirm its
Scriptural position regarding women’s ordination; and be it
further

Resolved, That the LCMS continue to oppose women’s
ordination as prohibited by Holy Scripture.

To Reject Ordination of Women

Wuereas, Our Lord Jesus Christ charged His apostles to
teach the nations “to observe all that I have commanded
you”; and

Wuereas, The apostles certainly obeyed their Master’s
command and taught His entire body of doctrine; and

Wuerras, In the canonical books written by six of the
apostles we do not find a single instance where an apostle
appointed a woman to the office of the public ministry, in
any congregation founded by such an apostle; and

Wuereas, Paul plainly states that a bishop or pastor must
be the husband of one wife, nowhere saying that a bishop
also may be the wife of one husband or a single lady; and

WHEREAS, Paul who received his entire doctrine by direct
revelation from heaven (Gal.1:12) declares emphatically in
1 Tim. 2:12: “I permit no woman to teach or to have au-
thority over men”: and in 1 Cor. 14:34 ff., “It is shameful for
a woman to speak in church,” i.e., to want to instruct men
in divine services for the entire congregation: and

Wuereas, Paul stresses the fact that his directions in this
respect are “a command of the Lord”: and

WHEREAS, It is not true that men and women are equal
in all respects; and

Whereas, It is in no wise degrading to woman to be ex-
cluded from the office of the public ministry since in the

office of the public ministry,

To Insist on Scriptural Teaching Regarding
the Ordination of Women

WuereEas, The ALC, the LCA, and a number of pastors
and theologians in the LCMS have found nothing in the
Bible contrary to the ordination of women pastors; and

Wuereas, St. Paul forbids the practice of the ordination
of women pastors in his First Letter to the Church at Corinth
(Ch. 14); therefore be it

Resolved, That the LCMS break all fellowship arrange-
ments with the ALC; and be it further

Resolved, That the LCMS inform the LCA that fellow-
ship discussions with it are impossible unti] they desist from
ordaining women pastors; and be it further

Resolved, That those pastors and theologians in the LCMS
be notified of their error and asked to change their erro-
neous views and to notify the Synod of their change; and
be it further

Resolved, That no professor at a school of the Synod be
allowed to teach that the Scriptures permit and/or do not
speak to the matter of the ordination of women; and be it
further

Resolved, That no congregation or pastor in the Synod
be permitted to hold or teach or preach that women pastors
are permitted; and be it finally

Resolved. That the Synod require of its President, the
Presidents of its Districts, and its boards of control, to take
immediate action in those cases where this error is still
taught.
