Report of Editorial Commission
of “Advance” Magazine
At its 1971 convention the Synod resolved to add to its
Handbook three new sections to describe the purposes and
function of Advance magazine and its Editorial Commission.
The following was adopted as a statement of the pur-
poses of Advance: “To transmit information concerning the
Synod’s work and programs to the congregations, to assist
congregational leaders in developing coordinated programs,
and to enable congregations to share with one another suc-
cessful methods of practical church work,”
The Synod’s President appoints members to the Editorial
Commission of Advance. The Bylaw outlining this procedure
States: “The President, after consultation with the Board of
Directors, shall appoint an editorial commission of six mem-
bers, who shall serve terms of 4 years, in such a way that
the terms of three members alternate with those of the other
three members. In view of the purposes of the publication,
the President shall appoint both staff and field members
to the commission,”
When a full-time editor is employed for Advance mag-
azine “the procedures prescribed in the Bylaws for the selec-
tion of executive secretaries shall govern the Editorial Com-
mission in engaging an editor.”
Following the Synod's 1971 convention President Preus
appointed the following to the Advance Editorial Commis-
sion: Victor A. Constien, Lois Dankenbring, A. Lorenz
Grumm, Duane E, Hingst, Walter J. Hoffmann, and Leslie
F. Weber. At its first meeting the Commission elected A.
Lorenz Grumm chairman and Walter J. Hoffmann secre-
tary.
As part of his office of Secretary of Adult Education, Vic-
tor A. Constien served as Managing Editor of Advance mag-
azine through the June 1972 issue. By special arrangement
with the Editorial Commission for Official Church Period-
icals, Eldon Weisheit was employed as a part-time Manag-
ing Editor for the issues from September 1972 through June
1973. The Secretary of Adult Education continues to serve
as Operations Director.
The monthly circulation of Advance in 1971 averaged
58,088 copies. The 1972 average was 58.414. The Synod sends
free copies to pastors, teachers, and eight elected leaders in
each congregation.
The Synod titled its Planned Parish Program for the past
2 years “Sent to Reconcile” and “Rejoicing in Mercy.” Each
issue of Advance has featured a group study guide to help
readers discover the implications of these themes for their
local work in missions, evangelism, worship, personal de-
cision-making, the family, youth ministry, education, Chris-
tian community building, stewardship, social ministry and
world relief.
The June issue of Advance the past 2 years featured
detailed helps for planning a local ministry of the Word that
could help a congregation speak to concrete needs among
certain target groups of people in the community.
Special inserts in Advance since July 1971 have published
materials for ministry with the mentally retarded, mission
patrons, focus on youth, Lutheran television, “Keys for
Christ,” Synod's 125th Anniversary People-to-People Proj-
ects, and the “Brethren, Pray for Us” calendar.
The monthly feature “Reactions” shares comments solic-
ited from church leaders across the nation on concerns com-
mon to local congregations. In the February 1973 issue, for
example, several different parishes responded to the ques-
tion, What can be done to make visitors feel at home in a
worship service?
