Das „amerikanische“ Lutherthum. 23

dern dazu geschickt ꝛc.

serm Namen alles verrichten sollen.

"American" Lutheranism. 23

22. It does not follow from this, however, that the
congregation may also grant a woman permission to teach, etc.

"But when the papists confront us with Paul's saying, 1 Cor. 14:34-35:
Let the women keep silent in the congregation, etc. — from this it
follows that preaching cannot be common to all Christians, namely not
to any women. To this I answer, that one does not let the mute, and
others who are likewise hindered or unfit, preach either. For
although everyone has the authority to preach, no one should be
employed for it, nor should anyone presume to do it, unless he is
more fit for it than others, etc. Thus Paul forbids women to preach
in the congregation where men are present, so that honor and
discipline may be kept, since it is more fitting and proper for a man
to speak, and he is also more suited to it." 40)

23. Public service in the office has no other power than
that which the proclamation of the word of God itself brings
with it.

"The sacrament of ordination can be nothing else than a rite for
choosing preachers in the church. — — For this reason they are also
called shepherds, in that they are to feed — that is, to teach." 41)

"It is the ministry of the word of God that makes a priest and a
bishop." 42)

"As if they were forced to confess that all of us, as many as are
baptized, are likewise priests, as indeed in truth we are; and that
the preaching office alone has been entrusted to them, yet with our
consent — then they would also know at once that they have no right
or power to command over us, except so far as we ourselves, of our
own good will, allow them. It stands written, 1 Pet. 2:9: Ye are a
chosen generation, a royal priesthood, and a priestly kingdom;
therefore we are all priests, as many of us as are Christians. But
those whom we call priests are ministers chosen by us, who are also
to carry out everything in our name. And the priesthood is nothing
other than a ministry." 43)

"American" Lutheranism.

For some time now a certain party, which outwardly and in name
belongs to the Lutheran Church, but which at the same time rejects —
indeed reviles — its doctrine in important points, has named its
peculiar tendency "American Lutheranism," in order thereby to present
its views as the ones historically warranted within the American
church, and the faith
