The first number of this extensive work — which will contain not "at most 10 volumes of 50 sheets," but at least 15 of them — promised "to hold fast as its foundation the faith in the revelation of salvation in Christianity." On the strength of this assurance a multitude of theologians of acknowledged Christian mind have lent their names for the cover, and American scholars have arranged an English translation. The book is to contain "the well-tested results of the scientific continuation in all parts of theology"; it is "intended not only for theologians but generally for all — who have a heart for the affairs of the church," and hence for all true members of the church. Assessments of the whole will not fail to appear later; for the present one may see from the following examples in what spirit the book is written and how far Prof. Herzog has kept his promise to his countless subscribers.
The New Testament and all Christian churches have maintained from the apostles down to 1853 that the Old Testament contains the true chronology and history from Adam to Christ. It was also known that the history of the Egyptians did not begin before the year of the Sothic period 2782 B.C., 656 years after the Flood. Against this, Vol. I, p. 142, now teaches as follows: "The great fact that the ancient Egyptian kingdom stood already in the fourth millennium before Christ in a national flourishing which presupposes a still far longer period of development — is a new testimony that in the Old Testament we are not to look for chronological revelations concerning the outward course of human history." Accordingly the Flood and the creation are
