Regulirung und weitere Ausbildung in unsern Gemeinden beziehen;

spection of Lutheran schools by union school authorities. After exhaustive
debate, the following resolution was therefore reached: "The pastors of our
church shall everywhere take the inspection of the schools of their
congregations into their own hands, but as local school inspectors shall
submit to the inspection of the union superintendents as district school
inspectors of the state."
We could cite many more resolutions bearing on the internal regulation and
further development of our congregations; but we fear becoming too lengthy
and offering matters too specific, which would in the end be of less
interest to readers elsewhere. Yet, in order also to show how we proceed in
particular cases, we will cite only a few of the resolutions adopted.
Whether the synod should henceforth be held every 2 years, or, as had been
the practice until now, every 4 years, was a subject over which a lively
debate arose. It was resolved, however, to leave matters as they had been.
Further: "A closing deadline (with regard to motions to be submitted) shall
be announced by the Superior Church Council at the latest half a year before
the convening of the synod, by which motions must be submitted. Motions
arriving later require the support of the synod, which is already now
required by rule."
"Pastors, upon departing from their congregations, shall take care for their
successors. They shall observe all those considerations which are enjoined
upon them both by their obligation toward the individual congregations and
toward the church as a whole."
"The widows' and orphans' half-year stipend, in the case of a vacant parish,
shall be reckoned not from the day of the pastor's death, but beginning with
the new quarter following the quarter in which the death occurred."
Section 32 of the Board of Trustees' Regulation is amended as follows: "The
accused is to be informed, at the start of the inquiry, that he is free to
raise objections against his judges before the superintendent, and this
objection shall be given particular consideration, and a suitable remedy
brought about through an appointed substitution, in the case where the
pastor or another member of the church council is a party to the matter,"
and so forth.
We now turn our gaze from within to without, and first of all to that place
where we encounter the closest and, to us, dearest kinship of nature and
relation: the Lutheran territorial churches. That the gaze of our synod
should also turn toward them lay near at hand. We are indeed of one flesh
and bone, we are brothers. And surely this word too should stand before our
eyes in particular: "Look unto the rock from which you were hewn, and to the
hole of the pit from which you were dug." Isaiah 51:1.
From Pastor Diedrich the following motion had proceeded: "May a right
reverend Superior Church Council, in the name and on behalf of our church,
address to the church governments of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church
