Mittel in Anſpruch nehmen möchten.

The College at Altenburg.

An important matter that again came before the synod for
deliberation was the affair of the Altenburg institution. Against the
transplanting of it to St. Louis — recognized as advisable after careful
consideration at last year's synodical convention — the congregation at
Altenburg had now submitted a petition to the synod, in which it once
again set forth the reasons why the college should remain at Altenburg
and not be moved to St. Louis.

The synod did not fail to give these reasons the greatest attention and
to subject them to the most careful examination; but in doing so it
gained anew the conviction that, if one makes the stronger development
and greater effectiveness of the institution itself — and thereby the
welfare of the Church in general — the chief concern, there are far more
and weightier reasons to move the institution to St. Louis than to leave
it at Altenburg. It therefore entrusted a committee with drafting a
detailed letter of reply to the congregation at Altenburg, and was
unanimous that the intended relocation should take place as soon as
possible.

When this matter was later taken up again, discussion first turned to
the professorship to be established at that institution. Besides the Rector,
Mr. Gönner, already at the college, and a professor of theology to be
called to replace Pastor Löber, the synod did wish to be able to appoint
a third professor as well, with special attention to the English language;
but it had to postpone fulfilling this wish for the time being, since the
construction of the seminary building in St. Louis and the institution's
other needs would claim all the means presently at its disposal.

Construction of the seminary is to begin as soon as possible, and the
synod resolved to appoint a building commission for this purpose,
consisting of no fewer than seven and no more than eleven members.
The synod appointed pastors Walther and Bünger, and left the choice of
the remaining members to the congregation in St. Louis. This building
commission is to choose and appoint from among its own number a
special treasurer, who is to keep and render account of income and
expenditure; it is also responsible for any loans it takes out in the
synod's name.
