Die Doctrinelle Grundlage zur Union des Evang. Predigervereins von Cincinnati. 217

Art. 18.

The Doctrinal Basis for the Union of the Evangelical Ministers' Association of Cincinnati. 217

Art. 18. The Sabbath. — The Sabbath was made for man throughout all generations, and all people should remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy, not to go their own ways, nor to seek their own pleasure, nor to speak their own words, but to devote its holy hours to reading, meditation and prayer, to the worship of God in his sanctuary, and to works of mercy and love.

Art. 19. The Christian Ministry.—Christ has instituted preachers in his Church to preach the Gospel, to administer baptism and the Lord's Supper, and to keep watch over the whole flock, over which the Holy Spirit has set them as bishops, to shepherd the Church of God. Christian ministers should be blameless as stewards of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not engaged in dishonest dealing; but hospitable, kind, temperate, just, holy, chaste, and holding fast to the word that is sure and able to teach.

Art. 20. Christian Duties. — It is the duty of every person to repent of their sins in true repentance; to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ unto salvation; to confess Christ before men; to be baptized; to celebrate the Lord's Supper; to pray in the name of Christ and to read the Scriptures daily; through their life, and speech, and prayer to labor to bring the unconverted to Christ, to obey the ten commandments; to love God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit with all their heart, soul, mind and strength; to do all that they would have others do to them; to serve the cause of Christ with the means with which God has blessed them; to be gentle, humble and forgiving; to take up their cross daily and follow Christ; to live chastely, justly and godly in this world; to seek the things that are above, and not the things that are on earth; to love their neighbor as themselves; to love the brethren; and in all things to adorn the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ through obedience.

Art. 21. Death, Resurrection, Judgment, and Eternal Reward and Punishment. — After death the bodies of men return to dust, and their spirits to God who gave them, and on the last day there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and of the unjust, when all men must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that everyone may receive according to what he has done in the body, whether good or evil; and the wicked will go into eternal torment, but the righteous into eternal life."
