Theological Axioms.
(Continued.)

XXII. Concerning the Holy Preaching Office and Matters Connected With It.

1. God has properly ordained three estates in the world against the devil and his following, namely, the household estate, the civil estate, and the teaching estate. (Luther.)

2. Oeconomicus ordo inservit generis humani multiplicationi, politicus ejusdem defensioni, ecclesiasticus ad salutem aeternam promotioni. (Gerhardus.)

The household estate serves for the increase of the human race, the civil estate for the defense of the same, the churchly estate for the furthering of eternal blessedness.

3. Oeconomicus ordo oppositus est a Deo vagis libidinibus, politicus tyrannidi ac latrociniis, ecclesiasticus haeresibus ac doctrinae corruptelis. (Gerh.)

The household estate is set by God against unbridled lusts, the civil estate against tyranny and robberies, the churchly estate against heresies and corruptions of doctrine.

4. Tu supplex ora, tu portege, tuque labora.

You have the office of praying humbly; you, of protecting; and you, of laboring.

5. Munus est jus ac debitum sic agendi. (Kromayer.)

An office is the right and the duty of acting thus.

6. De ministerio tractari potest dupliciter: 1. abstractive, prout ipse status, ipsumque officium christianae considerationi subjacet (quo respectu agitur de ministerio articulo quinto Augustanae Confessionis); 2. concretive seu ratione personarum, quae in hoc sacro officio versantur (sic articulo decimo quarto Augustanae Confessionis de hoc themate agitur).
