(lb.)

to it belongs also a certain trial, whereby the communicant should examine himself as to how he stands with God, so that he does not use it unworthily; to it belongs a heartfelt longing for this wholesome food of the soul. All of which, in the case of such a person who lies in the last throes and is so near death that even the short time required for the consecration is no longer available, cannot be found. For which reasons one ought rather not administer the Lord's Supper to such a dying patient, so that one does not perhaps give it to an unworthy person and give others cause for offense and false security — as though the mere act of using the Lord's Supper were enough, even if it is received without faith, without self-examination, without heartfelt longing for it — and its use might therefore well be postponed to the very last hour of death. If this is so beyond doubt, then it would be good for a preacher always to act accordingly, so that no answer would be needed to the other point, namely whether the spoken words, "Take, eat, this is my body," etc., would in such a case suffice for consecration.
