in the head; and on July 26 of this year, in Philadelphia, at the burial of a
soldier of our congregation, I partly lost my hearing through the report of
the volley fired at the grave, which was too loud and too near me, so that
from that time on I have an incessant roaring and rushing in my head with
dizziness, as though I lived in a mill or beside a waterfall, and can indeed
still preach now and then, but can no longer hold catechization, because my
hearing fails me."

Finally we find in the work cited the remarkable report that Mühlenberg the
elder "helped to bring it about that an article was inserted into the new
form of government of the united free states, by which all privileges for
churches and schools were secured for the future." (P. 1419.) Probably only
the constitution of the State of Pennsylvania is meant by this, in which
Art. 7, § 3 reads: "The rights, privileges, immunities and estates of
religious societies and corporate bodies shall remain as if the constitution
of this State had not been altered or amended."

Literary Notices.

Die evangelisch-lutherische Kirche Ungarns in ihrer geschichtlichen
Entwicklung, together with an appendix on the history of the Protestant
churches in the German-Slavic lands and in Transylvania. By Johannes Borbis,
cand. theol. and corresponding member of the Vogtland Antiquarian Society,
with a preface by Dr. theol. Ch. E. Luthardt, ordinary professor of theology
at the University of Leipzig. Nördlingen, C. H. Beck. 1861. 35¼ sheets,
paperbound, 2 Thlr. 10 Ngr.

"The foregoing work is written with churchly consciousness and warm faith; it
is distinguished not only by an objective, clear and lucid presentation, but
also gives, with the greatest possible conciseness and yet great
completeness, the history of this territorial church down to the present day,
and communicates the most important documents verbatim. The appendix
essentially heightens the significance of this work, in that it affords
thereby a survey of the history of the two Protestant churches in the whole
imperial state of Austria."
