58. State Normal School, Montgomery. Missionary Weeke
lives in Montgomery. There is a large teachers' seminary
for coloured people there. In this institution Rev. Weeke holds a service every week,
which is attended on average by 150 persons. The students
come from all parts of the state.
59. Veterans' Hospital, Tuskegee, Ala. Near the famous
Negro institution Tuskegee our national government has
erected a large hospital for coloured ex-soldiers. Rev. Weeke has described his rescue work
among the sufferers in the August issue of the "Missionstaube" [Mission Dove].
60. Pilgrim, Birmingham. (Founded 1923. Missionary:
Wm. Eddleman, since 4 October 1925.) Superintendent Schmidt
says: "A building is urgently needed. It would cost about
$15,000. Coloured sectarian churches have built magnificent churches.
Our Lutheran Negroes have turned their backs on the outward splendour of these churches
and serve God in the church that has become dear to them.
I believe it is possible to build up a large congregation here in Birmingham
if the Synodical Conference (*Synodalkonferenz*) gives these faithful ones a
building in which church and school can be held undisturbed and without
hindrances." Souls: 61 (increase: 23). Communicant
members: 48 (increase: 19). Voting members: 15.
61. Trinity, Selma, Ala. (Founded 1919. Missionary:
Prof. Paul Lehman, since 1924.) The services are held in the auditorium
of the new college. Prof. Lehman preaches twice every Sunday
and makes many mission visits during the week. On the college
grounds a new school was built in September 1925, which
cost $2,800. Since we built on the campus, $700
was saved. The children in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, as well as
others, have given over $3,689 of the $3,500 requested two years ago.
The school, attended by 125 children, also serves as
practice school. The school in East Selma has not closed. When
Mrs. Baxter, the teacher, was asked: "How much salary do you expect?"
she answered: "What the church wants to give me." She receives
monthly $10 to $25, depending on what the congregation raises. She
teaches about 65 children. The congregation numbers 70 souls (increase:
19), 50 communicant members and 13 voting members.
Independent Congregations.
62. St. Paul's, Los Angeles, Cal. Rev. W. Tröger in Santa
Monica and Rev. J. W. Theiß in Los Angeles for a number of years faithfully
took care of the Lutheran Negroes who came from New Orleans.
At the repeated request of the brethren in Southern California
our Mission Board took over the work last summer
and transferred Rev. John McDavid from Charlotte to Los Angeles. He
was installed there on 13 September 1925. A nice church
