Carolus Josephus Hefele, th. Doctor ejusdemque in acad. Tubing. Prof. Ed. 3. Tubingae, in bibliopolio Henr.

questions follow, by which the punctum saliens in the citations is brought to light. The fewer among the preachers who are in a position to procure the fathers for themselves, and the less time allows them — even could they procure them — to search through the voluminous works of the fathers, so much the more valuable is Eckhardi's work, which is hardly equalled, much less surpassed, by any other of the same tendency. Since, however, the little book (in the second edition, which we possess, comprising about 550 pages in small octavo) is not very often met with in the antiquarian catalogues, and hence would be hard to obtain in many copies, and since surely many even of those pastors who are not so well versed in the Latin and Greek languages as to be able to read the book without difficulty have the desire to become acquainted with the language and doctrine of the fathers of the ancient church, and to refresh themselves upon the testimonies which have been rendered in all ages to the divine truth once recognized, and so to strengthen their faith — it gives us high joy to be able hereby to announce to our esteemed readers that Conrector Schick has, at our request, resolved to translate Eckhardi's patristics into German and to put it into print, and also to enrich the little work with an appendix of biographical notices concerning the fathers cited, and so to make it accessible and useful to every layman as well. The small samples which Conrector Schick has already given of his excellent gift for producing good translations — in „Lehre und Wehre“, the October number of this year, and in the translation of Weller's little writing, „Dr. M. Luther's Instruction in the Right Study of Theology“ (St. Louis, at Wiebusch and Son, 1857; price 10 cts.) — may already be a pledge that the reader can expect something of high quality. Conrector Schick hopes to have the already begun translation completed by August of next year, so that the work, God willing, will make its appearance in the late summer.

Little as it is possible, as already remarked, for a Lutheran pastor to procure even the chief works of the fathers, he ought nevertheless, we think, to have at least some of them in his library. Among these we reckon above all the writings of the so-called apostolic fathers, or immediate disciples of the apostles. A particularly fine edition of their writings is the following: Patrum apostolicorum opera. Textum ex editionibus præstantissimis repetitum recognovit etc. Carolus Josephus Hefele, th. Doctor ejusdemque in acad. Tubing. Prof. Ed. 3. Tubingae, in bibliopolio Henr. Laupp 1847.“ This edition was prepared by a Catholic theologian, yet is nonetheless of great worth. Those passages in which the author betrays the papist are easy to recognize and to set aside, and are many times outweighed by the other excellences of the edition. At the head stand Prolegomena, which contain the life-history of the apostolic fathers and, of the several
