excuse for the inseparability of his worthy person from the cause of revision: "which, being just as natural as it is dutiful, only ill-will can construe amiss.") The matter is "highly important" for me too, and for all evangelical fellow believers, but only for a quite different reason than for Stier and his people. We friends of the German Reformation do not wish that, in addition to the vexatious fact of a Confessio Augustana invariata et variata, there should now also arise the still worse "schism between Biblia variata and invariata" — that alongside the mangled confession of faith there should now also stand a mangled rendering of Scripture. We are principled opponents of the "revision"; for "here, as elsewhere in so much else nowadays, there lies behind it that one deep opposition of outlooks." For us, the title which Stier claims for himself and his fellow revisers — "We free friends of the new on the old foundation, we men of progress and advance, by the right of the spirit over the tradition of the letter" — has nothing at all appealing about it; we consider it more Christian, more evangelical, more Protestant, more German, in keeping with apostolic injunction, to hold fast what we have, so that no one may rob us of our crown, than to make a display with the hollow catchwords of free-congregationalist enthusiast-mongering. It must be said to the credit of the Canstein revision project that it opposes Stier's humbug with clear consciousness and decided deliberateness. The Halle Bible Institute feels the need of "a revision grounded on fixed principles," in order if possible to do away again with the diversity of textual form that has gradually crept into the Lutheran Bible (there are now at least seven different recensions in use). It believes it may hope for this all the more, because the text of its Bible has long since been "regarded almost everywhere as the genuine Luther text, held to be the recepta." In order to preserve this reputation for the Canstein Bible in the future as well, Mönckeberg decidedly opposes the Meyer-Stier manner of revision, and we consider it a duty to draw the attention of all who seek brief instruction on the history and present state of the revision-work to his "Proposals."
