Lehre und Wehre.

Jahrgang VIII. September 1862. No. 9.

Theologische Axiome.

XXI. Von der Kirche und damit zusammenhängenden Lehren.

1. Extra ecclesiam non est salus. (Gerhard.)

Außer der Kirche ist kein Heil.

(Kromayer.)

Volume VIII. September 1862. No. 9.

Theological Axioms.

XXI. On the Church and the Doctrines Connected with It.

1. Extra ecclesiam non est salus. (Gerhard.)

Outside the Church there is no salvation.

(Kromayer.)

terris matrem. (Augustine.)

He does not have God in heaven for his Father, who does not have the
Church on earth for his Mother.

3. The Christian Church is properly nothing other than the assembly
of all believers and saints. (Augsburg Confession.)

4. A child of seven years knows, thank God, what the Church is,
namely, the holy believers, and the little sheep who hear the voice of
their Shepherd. For thus the children pray: I believe in one holy
Christian Church. (Smalcald Articles.)

5. Christ says plainly that the good seed are the children of the
kingdom, the weeds are the children of the devil, the field is the world,
not the Church. (Apology.)

6. Therefore we confess rightly in the faith when we say: We believe
in one holy Christian Church; for it is invisible, lives in the Spirit,
in a place to which no one can come. (Luther.)

7. The holy Church of Christ speaks thus: I believe in one holy
Christian Church; the mad church of the Pope speaks thus: I see one holy
Christian Church. (Luther.)

clarissime splendet. (Gerhard.)

We do not say that the Church is invisible for this purpose, that we
might thereby maintain that the Church was preserved under the papacy;
for we say that the true, holy, and catholic Church is always invisible,
even at this very time when the rekindled light of the Gospel shines most
brightly in many kingdoms and provinces,
