(Bernhard.)
Gottes Geschenke sind sowohl unsere Werke, als seine Belohnungen;
ipse perfecit. (Cyprian.)
Gott vergilt uns, was er selbst geleistet, und belohnt, was er selbst
vollbracht hat.
Gaben in uns.
49. Justitia hominis non renati, utut eam temporaliter Deus honoret

len. Wir lesen a. a. O. u. A. Folgendes:

Remarks on the Office. 293
The rewards are given not for the sake of the works, but according to
the works.
(Gerh.)
Christ does not say your great reward will be heaven, but in heaven.
(Bernhard.)
God's gifts are both our works and his rewards; and he who made
himself a debtor through the former has also thereby made us deserving
through the latter.
ipse perfecit. (Cyprian.)
God repays in us what he himself has furnished, and honors what he
himself has accomplished.
(Gerh.)
Out of grace God crowns not our merits, but his own gifts in us.
49. Justitia hominis non renati, utut eam temporaliter Deus honoret
iniquitatem. (Luther.)
The righteousness of the unregenerate man, however much God may
reward it for a time with the best gifts of this life, is nevertheless before
God a mask and godless hypocrisy. And it is a wondrous problem that God
rewards the righteousness that he himself accounts unrighteousness.
(Luther.)
It is equally necessary that godly teachers press and set forth the
doctrine of good works as diligently as the doctrine of faith.

Remarks on the Office.
In the Erlangen journal for the months of July and August there are
found remarks on the office that contain matter of value in a twofold
respect. First, they proceed from the usual meaning of the word "office"
and show from it how the wholly and merely apparent contradiction is
resolved that comes to light in our theologians' statements about the
divine character and necessity of the office; and second, they show how
the doctrine of the original possession of the office on the part of the
church by no means conflicts with the doctrine of the divine institution of
the pastoral office as well. We cannot forbear communicating here the
most important of it. We read there, among other things, the following:
