unsers Bekenntnisses“. Ich sage: ach, möchte doch dies anerkannt
werden, wie bald würde dann Friede sein! Gott helfe dazu!
Sie ist nach keiner Seite hin, nicht einmal nach der der Form, bedeutend;
leichter aufgeht, als guter Same.
Es lautet also:

of our confession." I say: ah, if only this were acknowledged,
how soon there would then be peace! God help to that end! Meanwhile may He
guard us all from bitterness, wrath and anger!
What the book noticed says about schism and the sovereignty of pastors,
and with reference to the office of elder, I shall perhaps have occasion
to consider in the future. E.
A Good Student Confession.
On the occasion of the deliberations concerning the budget in the department
of worship and public instruction, the deputy for the city of
Leipzig, Dr. Heyner, delivered a speech in the second chamber of the Saxon estates
assembly to which (it has been deemed worthy of a separate printing) the title
"On the Neo-Theological Tendency in Saxony" has been given.
The speech is a not exactly very refined outburst of indignation
at the position of power of the divine Word, which for about ten years has
again come to prevail in Saxony, and with which the Leipzig
gentleman, because it must be inconvenient to him, cannot declare himself in agreement.
It is on no side significant, not even on that of form;
both in its attacks upon the ministry and in those upon
the tendency with which the ministry "flirts," it moves predominantly in general phrases
and asserts throughout without proving. Nevertheless it will
have found manifold approval among the people, just as weeds always
come up more easily than good seed. Although the whole speech is a sign of the
times, which would deserve to be recorded for the astonishment of posterity,
the Pilger's few columns are too dear to it to reproduce it.
Let only one piece be taken from it, which has found a refutation of rare
excellence. It runs thus:
"As proof of the present churchly craze for fashion and exclusive tendency,
let one compare the theological life of that time and of the present at the University
of Leipzig, and how at this nursery of learning the superorthodox tendency is unhappily
cherished and nurtured. Under the rule of the earlier rational
system, toleration prevailed. The two Lindners were able to teach and work unmolested.
In the time of Catholicizing Protestantism,
when the two Lindners were made examiners in the name of the state,
there prevailed apathy, the oppression of free and rationally thinking men. Where
formerly the torch of a Rosenmüller, a Krug, a Tzschirner, a Grossmann,
a Krehl, a Niedner shone — nor is Theile to be forgotten, who as the first professor
of theology here in this hall had the courage to speak the true words,
that Harless's call was a calamity for Saxony —
where such fresh and living spirits worked with blessing, there the ministry-of-worship tendency
has now, from the hothouse of the Vilmar and Eichhorn
