Lutherisch⸗theologische Pfarrers⸗Bibliothek. 347

Ein anderes großes casuistisches Werk ist: „Consilia theologica Witebergensia d. i. Wittenbergische geistliche Rathschläge des theuren Mannes Gottes D. Mart. Lutheri, seiner Collegen und treuen Nachfolger. Angefertigt von der theologischen Facultät daselbst. Frankfurt a. M. 1664,“ fol. Die genannte Facultät bildeten damals Abr. Calov, J. Meisner, J. Andr. Quenstedt und J. Deutschmann. Außer Luther's und Melanchthon's ertheilten Privatbedenken enthält dieses Werk fast nur im Namen der ganzen theologischen Facultät zu Wittenberg auf Erfordern erlassene officielle Vota. Das Ganze ist ähnlich wie das Dedekennische Werk eingerichtet, wie es denn auch als Ergänzung desselben zu betrachten ist, obwohl Dedekennus vieles hier Gegebenes schon mittheilt. Das Werk besteht aus vier Theilen. Der erste Theil handelt „von der Bibel und anderen Kirchensachen“, unter folgenden Titeln: Von der Bibel; von Lutheri Lehr und Reformation; von Religionsvergleichung und Besuchung der Concilien und Colloquien; von Carlstadt's, der Zwinglianer und Calvinisten Schwärmerei; von Huber's Schwärmerei in Absicht auf die Gnadenwahl; von den Photinianern (Socinianern) und Weigelianern; von Schwenkfeld's, der Wiedertäufer und anderer Schwärmer Irrthümern, sowie von den neuen Visionen; von den Interimisten und Syncretisten (hier ist auch die bekannte, aber seltene Schrift Calov's, der Con-sensus repetitus, mitgetheilt); von den Juden und Türken. Der zweite Theil handelt von den Ministerialsachen, unter folgenden Titeln: Von dem bischöflichen Rechte und dem Patronat; von der Vocation und Ordination der Kirchendiener; von der Versetzung derselben; vom Predigt⸗ und absonderlich Lehr⸗ und Strafamt; von Verwaltung der heiligen Sacramente; vom Gebet, Aufgebot und anderen Verrichtungen der Prediger und was ihnen nicht zustehe; von Besoldung, Freiheiten und Remotion derselben. Der dritte Theil handelt von Moral⸗ und bürgerlichen Sachen, unter folgenden Titeln: Von dem Unterschied des geistlichen und weltlichen Regiments; von den Gewissensfragen in Absicht auf die erste und auf die zweite Tafel des Gesetzes. Der vierte Theil handelt von den Ehesachen, unter folgenden Titeln: Von der Ehe überhaupt; von Eheverlöbnissen; von deren Lösung;

Lutheran-Theological Pastor's Library. 347

Supplements to all three of the preceding volumes. To list every single item would exceed the bounds of our journal; suffice it to say that scarcely any case of conscience concerning any of the named subjects could arise that would not find its answer in the Thesaurus from renowned theological faculties or individual famous theologians, drawn in part from their rarest works and from handwritten documents never printed, which the archives of universities and consistories contained. Only by far the smaller part is written in Latin, the far greater part in German. Improved and enlarged by Johann Ernst Gerhard (son of the well-known Joh. Gerhard), the Dedekenn Thesaurus was likewise brought out in folio by Chr. Grübel at Jena in 1671, as we learn from Buddeus's Isagoge.

Another great casuistic work is: "Consilia theologica Witebergensia, that is, the Wittenberg spiritual counsels of the dear man of God D. Mart. Lutherus, his colleagues, and faithful successors. Prepared by the theological faculty there. Frankfurt am Main, 1664," fol. The faculty named at that time consisted of Abr. Calov, J. Meisner, J. Andr. Quenstedt, and J. Deutschmann. Besides the private opinions given by Luther and Melanchthon, this work contains almost only official votes issued, upon request, in the name of the whole theological faculty at Wittenberg. The whole is arranged similarly to the Dedekenn work, as indeed it may also be regarded as a supplement to it, although Dedekennus already communicates much of what is given here. The work consists of four parts. The first part treats "of the Bible and other church matters," under the following headings: Of the Bible; of Luther's teaching and the Reformation; of the comparison of religions and the attending of councils and colloquies; of the enthusiasm of Carlstadt, the Zwinglians, and the Calvinists; of Huber's enthusiasm with respect to the election of grace; of the Photinians (Socinians) and the Weigelians; of the errors of Schwenkfeld, the Anabaptists, and other enthusiasts, as well as of the new visions; of the Interimists and Syncretists (here also is communicated the well-known but rare writing of Calov, the Consensus repetitus); of the Jews and the Turks. The second part treats of ministerial matters, under the following headings: Of episcopal right and patronage; of the calling and ordination of church servants; of their transfer; of the preaching office and, in particular, the teaching and disciplinary office; of the administration of the holy sacraments; of prayer, the publishing of banns, and other functions of the preacher, and what does not belong to him; of salary, privileges, and their removal. The third part treats of moral and civil matters, under the following headings: Of the distinction between the spiritual and the secular government; of the cases of conscience with respect to the first and to the second table of the Law. The fourth part treats of matrimonial matters, under the following headings: Of marriage in general; of betrothals; of their dissolution;
