geborene Candidaten.

...tive candidates. The number of catechists has grown from 20 to 27, that of the readers from 22 to 30, that of the schoolteachers from 41 to 47. The relation of our mission institutions to the English government has shaped itself ever more favorably. The government has in particular declared itself ready to support our seminary at Tranquebar with 40 rupees monthly, in case a capable director for it be sent out. For this office Missionary Stählin has been designated by the collegium. The five missionaries sent out today have acquired the Tamil language to such a degree that they have already tried their hand at writing out a Tamil sermon. They will be able to take part at once in the work of the mission. The chief aim in their instruction was an introduction to Tamil literature; all have read the chief Tamil work, the Kural. Three have pursued Sanskrit with good success; a fourth, who had to break off this study on account of illness, will take it up again. In English all are so far advanced that on their arrival in India they may also have attained the necessary facility in speaking. In everything belonging to the knowledge of India and of importance for the mission they have received instruction, especially in Indian mission work. — Thanks be to God, who has brought us thus far! May He fulfill the hope with which we see these five go forth! Of the six remaining pupils we hope to be able to train some for mission service in East India; with others it is still doubtful whether another path will not be more suitable for them. The receipts (reckoned from the general meeting of last year, June 25, to that of today) amount to 27,454 thalers, the expenditures to 27,993 thalers. According to the statement of several deputies, several remittances are moreover still outstanding, which will come in during the course of June. In the current year great expenditures await us. The mission in East India in its present state requires about 24,000 thalers, the mission house here about 4700 thalers in all; the journey and outfitting of the five missionaries sent out about 4000 thalers; their salary, from Christmas on, 1500 thalers. To this total sum of about 34,200 thalers there is still to be added what, in consequence of today's sending out, will become necessary in the near future for buildings, salaries for catechists and schoolteachers, and the like."
Hamburg. We read the following in the Prussian Lutheran "Kirchenblatt": Concerning the condition of the territorial church in Hamburg, a letter from there expresses itself thus: "The conditions of the territorial church here are becoming ever more wretched; the living, believing members of it ever more dissatisfied. They take all pains, indeed, to hold together their cause — that is, their private societies — and to declare themselves in word and deed against our withdrawal (that of the members of the Zion congregation) from the territorial church; but I think that in the end it will nevertheless avail them nothing, as now and then an honest man among them himself says. Without separation from the territorial church here there is certainly no help for them. Here every hereditary resident citizen has a share in the government in civil and state affairs, and naturally he will not let this right be taken from him in ecclesiastical and spiritual matters either. But what good can come of it when perhaps twenty kinds of belief are lodged in hearts and heads?"
Of Pastor Haag, who as is well known left the united church and with it his inspectorate in the Berlin united mission institute, we read in the same place: On the Sunday Quasimodogeniti there took place at Stolp in Hither Pomerania the solemn installation of Pastor Haag from the Grand Duchy of Baden into the office of pastor of the parish of Stolp, newly erected by separation from the former parish district of Ubedell, by Superintendent Pistorius of Wollin, with the assistance of the pastors Moraweck of Seefeld (under whose pastoral direction the parish of Stolp had stood until its being filled with a pastor of its own) and Latzel of Bromberg.
