at Concordia University, St. Paul, MN. My previous 10-year
background outside our system (Univ. of So. Dak. and Univ.
of Wisc.) also provided contextual background in educational
and administrative standards. During these turbulent times
when various forces test the very survival of our Concordia
University System, we need the best cooperative effort within
our church body to support our synodical colleges and universities and to provide direction for the university education of
laymen and church workers for our Church.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world,
the light that no darkness shall overcome. This light—God
reconciling people to Himself through the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus—is the central brightness that is to guide
our university education system. Every question and every
issue that arises should be decided in a framework of how best
to proclaim this message to others and to sustain Christians in
this faith using the resources God has made available. Each
decision should also be made in the humble knowledge that
God will work all things together for His good.

In many churches, the compromising of practice and doctrine has
weakened the message of the Gospel. The Lutheran Church—
Missouri Synod must retain her stand on Sola Scriptura as our
foundation if we are to continue as effective messengers of
God’s Word. For this to happen, the primary function of our
colleges must continue to be the training of faithful workers
for full-time ministry. At the same time, we are in the world.
Our Concordia system can position itself to meet future vocational needs by increasing satellite campus facilities and
online course work.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri
Synod’s schools are the backbone
of the LCMS’s strength as a church
body reaching out to members, surrounding community, the
country, and the world. The university system prepares individuals for servant leadership in the secular world through
study in various professional fields. The university system
of the LCMS is a source for church leadership development.
It is important that the LCMS continually encourage its universities to refine and be a leader in tertiary education for its
students and society. It should continue to be the desire of the
LCMS’s universities to provide exceptional staff and administrative leadership.

My previous experience on the Board for Higher Education
gives me some understanding of the challenges our universities and colleges face. If elected, I would use my God-given
gifts to help keep our university/college system strong and
vibrant.
