To Delay Final Decision
on Canadian Seminary Training
WHEREAS, There is very serious dissension and disagree-
ment in western Canada as to how seminary training is to be
best carried on in the future, and this dissension and disagree-
ment is growing worse rather than abating: and
WHEREAS, This situation could harm the life and mission of
the LCMS churches in western Canada for years to come; and
WHEREAS, No actions have yet been taken with regard to
seminary training in Canada which irrevocably commit us toa
permanent system of seminary training; and
WHEREAS, The process to form an indigenous, autonomous
synod of the LCMS congregations in Canada is moving
forward, and this new body will have to assume the responsi-
bility for and support of any programs of seminary training
which are established in Canada; and
WHEREAS, We are currently faced here in Canada with a
serious economic recession which is affecting all of the institu-
tions of our society including the churches; therefore be it
Resolved, That no further steps be taken for the time being
to open a seminary program in Edmonton, Alberta; and be it
further
Resolved, That any actions committing us to a permanent
program of seminary training at St. Catharines, Ontario, be
held in abeyance; and be it further
Resolved, That a temporary seminary training program be
maintained for western Canada at Lutheran Theological
Seminary in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, as we have had fora
number of years now; and be it further
Resolved, That the seminary training program for eastern
Canada at St. Catharines, Ontario, also continue on a basis
which would not irrevocably commit us to a permanent
program there; and be it further
Resolved, That both the “Concordia House Design,” sub-
mitted to the Board of Directors of the Manitoba and Saskat-
chewan District Nov. 3, 1980, and supported by that District at
the Lutheran Church—Canada convention in November 1981,
be considered further as an option for a “second” seminary, or
alternately, the proposal for one seminary at Winnipeg be
given reconsideration; and be it further
Resolved, That before any permanent action is taken, a
detailed study of what seminary training will cost under each
of the various alternatives be presented to the Canadian
congregations; and be it finally
Resolved, That the important decision in this matter be
reserved either to the new church body to be formed in Canada
or to the Canadian Districts of the LCMS if that body is not
formed.

tions; and
WHEREAS, Lutheran Theological Seminary, University of
Saskatchewan, has invited Lutheran Church—Canada to
establish Concordia House, an independent seminary, at its
