Report of the Board for Radio Station KFUO
The Board for Radio Station KFUO, whose privilege and
responsibility it is to carry on a nationwide radio ministry
through the facilities of KFUO Lutheran Radio, is pleased to
submit this report as a brief overview of this ministry during
the past biennium. The board wishes to acknowledge the grace
and guidance of almighty God and all the other blessings He
has so generously provided KFUO through dedicated individ-
uals. As the Gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed through
radio, the lost are being reached and the found are being
nurtured and equipped for greater service in the Kingdom.
KFUO Programming
Devotional programs, Bible study, discussion, and sacred
music programs are given emphasis in daily broadcasts.
Listeners are able to hear special reports on activities and
ministry within The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod,
reports from the Synod’s colleges and seminaries, and from
other organizations, institutions, and auxiliaries. New Gospel
programs are constantly being developed and tested as the
Board for Radio Station KFUO seeks to be a good steward of
the gift of radio. KFUO and KFUO-FM also serve listeners
with public affairs features, music, and news. The response to
KFUO's programs from listeners indicates that many are
being served in special ways and that the programming of
KFUO is beneficial and appreciated.
KFUO’s Outreach Ministry
While direct radio reception of KFUO’s programming is
limited to a 150-mile radius of St. Louis, a nationwide audience
is served through KFUO’s Extension Department. ‘‘Portals of
Prayer” is a daily devotional program offered free of charge for
use by radio stations, nursing home, hospitals, schools, prisons,
and other institutions. ‘Portals of Prayer” is currently broad-
cast in 700 locations nationally and internationally. In the 27
years since its inception nearly five million recorded copies of
“Portals of Prayer” have been distributed to outlets worldwide.
Since 1981 KFUO has sponsored the weekly 30-minute sacred
music program “JOY.” Distributed to some 300 radio stations,
“JOY” features Christian choral music along with commen-
tary and is designed to highlight the Scripture lessons
appointed for the particular Sunday of the church year.
Listeners response to this particular program has been excep-
tionally good.
KFUO as a Resource Ministry
KFUO Lutheran Radio produces and distributes other radio
programs and resource materials for use Synodwide. During
the past biennium this ministry has included:
—Custom production for congregations engaged in local
ministries. Using its professional facilities and personnel,
KFUO produces program material tailored to the needs
and requirements of individual congregations.
—Radio spot announcements encouraging church and
Sunday school attendance.
—A variety of cassette recordings for personal and congre-
gational use, such as convention addresses, rallys, etc.
—Sacred music by KFUO’s own Radio Choir. Since its
founding in 1978, the 80-voice choir has produced four
albums and has appeared in a number of public
performances.
KFUO is proceeding with the recording of the entire Bible,
the New International Version, and has completed the New
Testament portion. This series of ten-minute readings is
presently aired over KFUO and will be amde available to other
stations and for personal use.
As the world’s oldest religious radio station (founded in
1924) KFUO has a rich heritage. As the board charged with the
responsibility for the Synod’s radio ministry. the Board for
Radio Station KFUO seeks to remember the blessings of the
past while maintaining and enhancing the Synod’s place in
Gospel broadcasting. It also recognizes the need to move
forward in radio ministry and in service to the Synod. The
board believes KFUO is uniquely qualified to assist in
providing
—an extensive radio training program for future pastors:
—workshops in radio ministry for parish pastors;
—additional resource materials (tapes, records, scripts, etc.)
for congregations wishing to extend their ministries
through local radio programming:
—additional assistance to synodical boards, institutions.
agencies, and other organizations in the development
and production of radio programs and other audio
materials;
—additional development of new radio programs in varying
formats (devotionals, children’s programming, drama.
sacred music, spots. etc.) for sharing the Gospel and
furthering the work of the church.
KFUO’s Radio Ministry Is Maintained
Through Voluntary Support
All of KFUO’s work, local and international, is supported
through voluntary contributions from listeners and friends.
Thus. this ministry is sustained without funds from the budget
of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. The board wishes
to express its gratitude to all those in the Synod who have made
KFUO’'s work of Gospel outreach through radio possible with
their gifts of support. It also prays that the Lord will lead many
others to join in this important work through their support so
that KFUO’s ministry may be sustained and strengthened as it
moves forward to meet the challenges of the future. Due to
ever-increasing costs and somewhat static income, the need for
additional sources of income is readily apparent and is being
given high priority by the board.
