position; and be it further

Resolved, That the Synod encourage congregations located
near college campuses to develop special outreach programs to
students; and be it further

Resolved, That home congregations of students be asked to
notify LCMS congregations near the students’ campuses of the

To Reconsider Support
of Campus Ministry Communications

WHEREAS, The 1981 convention of The Lutheran Church—
Missouri Synod approved a resolution which in part took
action to ‘“‘set aside the present policy of the Board of Missions
in its financial commitment to Campus Ministry Communi-
cations ($26,000)”; and ;

WHEREAS, This resolution was a substitute for the resolution
offered by the convention committee, which changed the items
noted above, and was offered and decided at the end of the
convention when many delegates were absent (the vote was
236 against and 371 in favor); and

WHEREAS, There is a lack of literature for campus ministries
and the Synod is unable to provide its own funding for such
materials; therefore be it

to reconsider this move and restore support for Campus
Ministry Communications.

To Observe a Synodical Student
Recognition Sunday

WHEREAS, A large number of Lutheran young people are
students at our nation’s public colleges and universities,
seeking there the tools and knowledge to serve their Lord
through various professions and careers; and

WHEREAS, A significant number of people are also involved
in learning in other settings, such as higher-degree programs,
night classes, extension courses, and continuing education
programs; and

WHEREAS, Students attending college experience not only
the insights of new learnings, the joy of new friendships, and
the exercise of independence, but also experience fresh chal-
lenges to their faith and values; and

WHEREAS, The Districts of the LCMS currently support 84
full-time campus pastors and several hundred additional
contact congregations and pastors, who provide the witness
and nurture of the Gospel to students, teachers, and admini-
strators at most of our nation’s colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, The congregations of our Synod also have a role
in recognizing the students and learners in their midst,
supporting them in their learning, encouraging them in their
struggles, and responding to their special needs: and

WHEREAS, Students and learners who know that they are
remembered by their home parish will more readily respond as
faithful stewards and witnesses in their lives; and

Wuereas, A “Student Recognition Sunday” observed
during a holiday break when many students are at home would
allow congregations to give recognition to their students,
would give students an opportunity to participate in the life of
the congregation, and would also give students a chance to talk
about their faith and values in relation to campus life; therefore
be it i

Resolved, That The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
designate the first Sunday after Christmas a synodical
“Student Recognition Sunday”; and be it further

Resolved, That the Synod, through its Campus Ministry
executive, provide supporting materials, publicity, and sugges-
tions for such an observance: and be it finally

Resolved, That such materials not bear a specific date so
that parishes may designate the second Sunday after Christ-
mas or some other Sunday as “‘Student Recognition Sunday”
as local circumstances may warrant.
