1) Commentar. in Jeremiam Cap. XVII. Tom. V. Opp. p. 255.

88	The Grief of the Church in Hesse-Darmstadt.

-mon nature according to the flesh has obtained the privilege of the heavenly seat. You have seen that the Lord Jesus, according to the working of the Godhead, can subject all things to himself. Now learn that, according to the flesh also, all things are made subject to him, as it is written: Who wrought in Christ, raising him from the dead, and set him at his right hand in heaven, far above all principality, power, might, dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world but also in that which is to come, and hath put all things under his feet. Thus all things are made subject to him with respect to his flesh, according to which he was also raised from the dead;"

Jerome 1): "If anyone reproaches us that we too believe in him who says: now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth; we give him the apostolic answer: though we once knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no more. And this same apostle writes to the Galatians: Paul, an apostle, not from men, nor through man, but through Jesus Christ, who raised him from the dead. If then death is swallowed up in victory, why should not the lowliness of the flesh, which was assumed for the salvation of mankind, have become a partaker of the majesty of the Godhead, so that he made one out of both, and we worship not the creature but the Creator, who is blessed forever?"

The Grief of the Church in Hesse-Darmstadt.

We may rightly always grieve before the Lord when we see how things stand in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg. As Julian the Apostate once wished to restore heathenism, so the duke there wishes to set up the younger brother of heathenism, rationalism. But it

[continued from the previous page:] You have learned, then, that he can subject all things to himself, according to the working, as it is written: Who wrought in Christ, raising him from the dead, and setting him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world but also in that which is to come, and hath subjected all things under his feet. According to the flesh, therefore, all things are delivered to him as subject, according to which he was also raised from the dead.

1) Commentary on Jeremiah, chap. XVII, vol. V, Opp., p. 255. [If it should be objected to us that we too believe in him who says: But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you — we shall answer with that word of the Apostle: And though we have once known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no more. Finally, the same Apostle writes at the beginning of his Epistle to the Galatians: Paul, an apostle, not from men, nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead. For if death has been swallowed up in victory, why should not the lowliness of the flesh, which was assumed for the sake of human salvation, have passed over into the majesty of the Godhead, so that he made the two into one, and we might not adore the creature, but the Creator, who is blessed forever?]
