des HErrn. Ihre Dauer war Vormittags von acht bis halb zwölf Uhr;

The Synodical Convention in the Year 1851.

The German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other
states held its fifth annual convention at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the
newly built, spacious church of the Evangelical Lutheran Trinity
[Dreieinigkeits] congregation there, from 18 to 23 June.

In the absence of the president [Präſes], Pastor Wyneken, whom the
cholera then raging in St. Louis had unfortunately kept from attending
the Synod, the first vice-president, Dr. Sihler, opened the Synod, after
the singing beforehand of the hymn "Ah, stay with us, Lord Jesus
Christ, etc.," with a prayer. But since Dr. Sihler excused himself on
account of his throat ailment, which made speaking difficult for him,
Pastor Brohm, as second vice-president, took over the chair. In place
of the absent secretary, Pastor Habel, Pastor Schieferdecker was elected
for the present sessions. The Synodical address unfortunately had to be
omitted this time, because the president's absence had not become known
early enough to give his substitute the necessary time to prepare. There
were 20 sessions in all, which, according to the established order, each
began with the singing and prayer of one of the members of the Synod
and with the reading of a chapter of Scripture. For the passages to be
read, the Pastoral Epistles, the first three chapters of the Revelation
of St. John, and the Acts of the Apostles were chosen. The sessions were
each closed with the Lord's Prayer. Their duration was, in the morning,
from eight until half past eleven; in the afternoon, from half past two
until six. Besides the regular sessions, 4 pastoral conferences were
also held, which this time, because of the great quantity and
importance of the business before the Synod, were used as preliminary
discussions, so that the results reached in them were brought before
the Synod, submitted to its examination, and approved as the case
required. For the manifold trouble and burdensome work, the Synod was
again richly refreshed and strengthened by the heartfelt unity in faith
and in love that made itself known, and by the manifest
