schieden seien.

-vorced on those grounds. The relevant question was put to the assembly, and 45 of the theologians assembled gave their declaration of accession to the union with public naming of their names." Among them we find the well-known names: Dr. Müller, professor at Halle, Dr. Sander, superintendent at Wittenberg.

Stier's "Un-Lutheran Theses." From the aforementioned "Evangelical Church Gazette" we take the news that the Lutheran Saxon Provincial Association (within the Prussian territorial church) had approached the consistory concerned with a complaint regarding the publication of Stier's un-Lutheran theses, whereupon the authority, while expressing regret over this literary activity of the author, at the same time also replied with the declaration that it did not consider itself entitled to proceed disciplinarily against the author on that account.

The "Lutherans" within the Prussian Territorial Church. The Lutheran associations of the eastern provinces held, on April 18 and 19, as we already reported in the previous number, a general conference at Wittenberg. The following five propositions were here subscribed to anew "as the rule of faith and life for every member of the association": "1. We stand on the Lutheran confession; 2. we are convinced that our congregations have never legally ceased to be Lutheran, and intend to assert their confessional rights with all our strength; 3. the confessional right of the congregations demands a confessional church constitution; we accordingly desire the carrying-through of the Evangelical Lutheran confession in worship, congregational order, and government. 4. The next goal of our endeavor is the freeing of the altar service from all ambiguity, the stamping of the confession upon the whole of divine worship, an independent confessional church government, and the preservation of Lutheran principles also in the congregational constitution. 5. The carrying-through of these aims not by way of secession, but within the territorial church as the domain properly belonging to the Lutheran Church."

(Evangelical Church Gazette.)

Priestcraft within the Lutheran Church. In order not to spread to America as well the shame being inflicted in Germany on our Evangelical Lutheran Church, lying as it does in the dust, we have hitherto kept silent about certain resolutions passed by a Pastoral Conference calling itself Lutheran, which assembled some time ago at Rothenmoor in Mecklenburg. Unfortunately, however, the purpose of at least sparing our Church a disgrace here can no longer counsel us to silence, since the local "Informatorium" has made those resolutions its own. It states there, among other things: "The Pastoral Conference held last year at Rothenmoor confesses, on the basis of Holy Scripture and with our Symbols (!), that our Evangelical Lutheran Church" (the visible one, that is?) "is not only the particular church of the pure confession, but precisely
