das nehmlich billig in keiner lutherisch-theologischen Pfarrers-Bibliothek fehlen sollte, folgendes: Friederici Balduini Commentarius in omnes epistolas b. apostoli Pauli. Francofurti ad Moenum. A. 1710. in folio.

294 The Lutheran Theological Pastor's Library.

...which, indeed, by rights ought not to be missing from any Lutheran theological pastor's library — namely, the following: Friederici Balduini Commentarius in omnes epistolas b. apostoli Pauli. Francofurti ad Moenum. A. 1710, in folio. The author, a contemporary and intimate friend of Johann Gerhard, was professor of theology and general superintendent at Wittenberg, and died there in the year 1627. Among the numerous excellent theological writings of this profoundly learned, godly, and enlightened theologian, the palm is awarded throughout, alongside his Casuistry, to the commentary named above. Each Pauline epistle is treated in this work as follows: first comes a historical-critical introduction, in which a disposition of the contents of the whole epistle is likewise given; then each chapter is prefaced with a summary and a statement of the sections into which it falls; next follows the Greek text with the Latin translation set opposite, section by section, followed in turn by the analysis and explication of the text verse by verse, together with a paraphrase of the section. Two things are appended each time: first, a number of questions with their answers, and then a series of theological aphorisms — the former containing chiefly resolutions of biblical and dogmatic apparent contradictions, the latter of a more doctrinal and practical content. A testimony to the immense store of theological material which the work contains is the fact that Johann Olearius, formerly chief court preacher and general superintendent at Weissenfels, who died in 1684, extracted from it a work covering almost the entire field of systematic theology, and published it under the following title: Balduinianorum in omnes Pauli epistolas commentariorum index generalis. Francof. 1710. (a work of some 500 folio pages.) In it, then, given solely in Balduin's own words from his commentary, are to be found: 1. a dogmatics, 2. a polemics, 3. an exegetics, and 4. a moral theology, followed by a sevenfold so-called repertorium taken from the same source, namely a technologicum (containing the resolution of theological terms and distinctions), a philosophicum, a gnomologicum (cited sayings of other authors), a historicum, a philologicum, an allegoricum, and an onomasticum.

In thus closing the second division of our library, we now open to our esteemed readers the

Third Division, in which we have placed those works that treat of the dogmatic disciplines. We reckon here dogmatics in the narrower sense, then apologetics, polemics, symbolics, and finally ethics.

1. The first series in this division, then, consists of those works in which Christian dogmatics in the narrower sense is set forth.

a. Which work, among those that treat this discipline at length, ought to be named here above all others, can as little be asked as which star outshines all the others in brightness. As with this question, only
