Richtung in Anspruch.

Brüdern und Schwestern; c) aus beitragenden Gliedern;
d) aus Begünstigern.

58 A Visit in Amsterdam.

special tasks: a) The support of the Lutheran mission to the heathen, as it is carried on by the sending Evangelical-Lutheran Mission Society at Leipzig, through prayer and gifts of love. — b) The promotion of right knowledge of the pure Word and Sacraments, in particular through the distribution of books and writings suited to this end, as well as, in particular, by working toward the founding of special Lutheran schools, according to the provisions of the law concerning first-class schools; — c) the fostering and quickening of the connection with the Lutheran Church as a whole, through supporting its endeavors wherever it bears witness, suffers, and struggles.

2. The stance which the association wishes to take toward other Christian societies is a peaceable one. It claims for itself and its particular direction only the same right by which these work according to their own spirit. The association's stance toward the Church is one of subordinate service. It will not only strictly refrain from every encroachment upon the pastoral office ordained by the Lord, and from all unauthorized teaching and preaching, but will also decisively oppose such misconduct, as well as all sectarianism and every tendency which places itself not in and under, but over and beside, the Church.

3. The association consists of: a) the board; b) co-laboring brothers and sisters; c) contributing members; d) patrons.

4. The board consists of as many members as the leadership of the association requires. They divide the business among themselves by mutual agreement, and, in cases of resignation, replenish their number from the members of the association. It is incumbent upon the board, as upon the whole leadership of the association generally, so also in particular the appointment, and if necessary the dismissal, of the co-laboring brothers and sisters. Each individual board member also acts at the same time as a co-laboring brother.

5. As a requirement for being able to become a board member, as well as a co-laboring brother or sister, the following is demanded: the making of a declaration from which a warm heart for the Evangelical-Lutheran Church and a standing upon its confessional ground are evident.

6. It is incumbent upon the co-laboring brothers and sisters to win members and friends or patrons for the association; to keep exact lists of the same; to hand in these lists quarterly to the board; to be of assistance to the treasurer, at his request, in the collection of subscribed contributions; to distribute the books and writings designated for circulation by the board; and, in general, to form the uniting center for the members and friends of the association who attach themselves to them. Men attach themselves to the co-laboring brothers, women to the co-laboring sisters.

7. Every co-laboring brother comes together with the members and friends attached
