Note. Rev. Pastor König of Schwarmstädt, Kingdom of Hannover, likewise
applied for admission into the synodical fellowship. The Synod resolved
to admit him into the fellowship after a colloquy had been held, with
which Rev. Pastor Brohm was charged. D. Secr.
On the occasion of the admission of Pastors Wichmann and Polack into
our synodical fellowship, the committee concerned moved that the Synod
should set out the principles under which a Lutheran could, and must,
withdraw from any synod.
After discussion of this matter from several sides, it was declared that
a Lutheran could justify his withdrawal from a synod only in the
following cases:
1. if he had been expelled from a synod for confessing the truth; or
2. if remaining in a synod necessarily involved participation in false
doctrine or evil works; or
3. if a synod had plainly become a sect willfully persisting in heresy;
or
4. if a synod's continued existence amounted to an ongoing schism.
Regarding the doctrinal controversies [*Lehrſtreitigkeiten*] currently
unresolved in the Lutheran Church, Pastors Brohm and Gruber had asked
that the Synod take further steps toward a possible union with Pastor
Grabau and the Buffalo Synod.
Pastor Habel had submitted a letter to the Synod in which he testified
that he could not be in agreement with it, both regarding particular
points of doctrine and regarding some matters of practice. — As to
doctrine, after explanations made to him concerning the correct
understanding of the points he had criticized, he declared himself
