To Review 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy
of People’s Bible Commentary Series (CPH)

Wuereas, Concordia Publishing House has published a Bible
commentary series entitled the People’s Bible Commentary, origi-
nally copyrighted by Northwest Publishing House of the Wisconsin
Synod; and

WHEREAS, The commentary on | Cor. 14:33-38 states in part:
Paul ... forbids women to speak in the churches. They are to recog-
nize the headship of men in the church. Men are to be in charge in
church assemblies ... As Christian women listen to the voice of God
in Scripture ... they will recognize that the effort of feminists and
their supporters in the church to justify changing the role of women
in the church is not only vain; it is also dishonest manipulation of
the word of God (Corinthians by Carleton Teppe, Concordia Pub-
lishing House, 1992, pp. 136-37); and

WHEREAS, The commentary on | Tim. 2:11-15 states in part:
Paul’s concern in writing to Timothy is that the male and female
relationship may find application in the church, as it assembles for
worship and work. Since it is based not on local custom but on
God’s order established at creation, its validity continues and re-
quires application also today ... “The Christian woman knows that
if she were to demand the right to vote and to govern the congre-
gation, she would be exercising authority over the man who is to be
her head” (/, 2 Timothy, Titus by Armin Schuetze, Concordia Pub-
lishing House, 1993, p. 46); and

WHEREAS, These statements are contrary to the position of The
Lutheran Church-—-Missouri Synod, which has resolved: “We hold
likewise that Scripture does not prohibit women from exercising
the franchise in congregational or synodical assemblies” (Res. 2-
17, 1969 Convention Proceedings, pp. 88-89); and

WHEREAS, Synod in convention reaffirmed this position as re-
cently as 1995 (Res. 3-05, 1995 Convention Proceedings, pp.
119-20); therefore be it

Resolved, That Concordia Publishing House be instructed to im-
mediately withdraw the above-named commentaries from circula-
tion until their contents become consistent with our synodical po-
sition; and be it further

Resolved, That the President of Synod be directed to investigate
the process followed in reviewing and approving these materials
and report his findings through the official publications of Synod
by Dec. 31, 1998; and be it finally

Resolved, That Concordia Publishing House be required in the
future to identify as to source in its catalogs and publicity any ma-
terials being reprinted from publishing houses other than our own.

of Any Printed Matter Published by Synod
within Printed Matter Itself

WHEREAS, Articles in various Reporter supplements, CPH bul-
letin inserts (Contemporary Faith series), the Q&A section of The
Lutheran Witness have appeared without the name or names of the
author or authors; and

WHEREAS, It has been the common practice throughout the his-
tory of the church for the names of authors of especially theological
documents to be published along with the documents themselves;
and

WHEREAS, The Reformers themselves did not generally exclude
their names from published materials; and

WHEREAS, The authors of the Lutheran Confessions were well-
known at the time of the writing of the Confessions themselves and
in most cases included with the documents themselves their names;
and

WHEREAS, Various books of Holy Scriptures themselves, in
many instances, contain the name of the human author within them,
and

WHEREAS, It is standard practice in the United States of Amer-
ica for the authors of articles and publications meant for general
consumption to identify themselves in their works; and

WHEREAS, It is standard practice in the United States of Amer-
ica for newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals to decline to
publish comments offered for publication when the author of such
comments will not permit his or her name to also be published
along with his or her comments, and

WHEREAS, The general exception to this rule is the publication
of the editorials of the management of a newspaper, giving the of-
ficial opinion of that paper; and

WHEREAS, The publication of the names of the authors of vari-
ous synodical publications, and all articles within synodical publi-
cation, can only help to promote open and honest discussion and
dialog within the Synod concerning issues about which there are a
variety of opinions; therefore be it

Resolved, That the LCMS and the corporate bodies with which
it is affiliated be required to print the name, title, and/or position
of the author of any printed matter published by the Synod within
the printed matter itself and in close proximity to the specific text
written by said author.
