Lutheran Women’s Missionary League
LWML Mission Statement
The mission of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League
is to assist each woman of
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
in affirming her relationship with the triune God
so that she is enabled to use her gifts
in ministry to the people of the world.
The LWML, an official auxiliary of the LCMS, is committed
to touching the lives of all LCMS women and therefore the church
in several ways: the opportunity and resources for spiritual enrich-
ment, a greater mission awareness and personal commitment to ser-
vice. As Lutheran Women in Mission we can and do make a sig-
nificant difference for our Lord.
In June 1997 the Board of Directors adopted the following pri-
mary targets and goals for the 1997-99 biennium. A sampling of
activities that address these targets are listed.
Primary Target: Integrated Faith
Each woman, recognizing the spiritual freedom that comes from
her personal relationship with God, naturally demonstrates God’s
activity in her life.
Activities include: production of a variety of devotional materi-
als including “Lead Me, Lord, Through Tears,” a new video, Bible
studies directed toward the single woman, military women, and the
family.
Primary Target: Mission Ministry
The LWML intentionally reaches across all boundaries so that
God's people, regardless of age, culture, gender or profession, are
connected in mission ministry.
Activities include: resources to support the Young Women Rep-
resentative program, new sets of Tender Touches [a special series
of Christian greeting cards], promotion of Mission Projects through
update postcards and other visuals, continued development of the
LWML website including pages for districts, English as second
language Bible study, Side by Side in Service Pilot Project [a pro-
gram to connect diverse local groups].
Primary Target: Local Leaders
Willing and able leaders are identified and given permission to
develop and encourage a women’s organization that is sensitive,
relative, and appealing to the women in their congregations.
Activities include: development of resources for assisting local
groups including “We're Not Just Purple” supplement, zone re-
source packet, three new units of “Prepare to Serve!” [This contin-
uing education video series equips Christians for their many roles.
“Prepare to Serve!” instructs individuals in building relational skills
and identifies strengths and abilities to be used in everyday life. It is
a valuable resource for all God’s people.]
“Knowing Christ and Making Him Known” is the mission of
the Quarterly, the official publication of the LWML. Individual or
group subscriptions are available through the LWML office.
The Restructure Task Force has recommended that the national
organization consider realignment of tasks and the renaming of de-
partments, vice-presidents and committees to more directly reflect
their duties. These changes will enable the LWML to strengthen
its partnership with the various boards and departments of our
church and to more effectively assist local groups in their ministry.
