They are to recog- nize the headship of men in the church. Men are to be in charge in church assemblies ... As Christian women listen to the voice of God in Scripture ... they will recognize that the effort of feminists and their supporters in the church to justify changing the role of women in the church is not only vain; it is also dishonest manipulation of the word of God (Corinthians by Carleton Teppe, Concordia Pub- lishing House, 1992, pp. 136-37); and WHEREAS, The commentary on | Tim. 2:11-15 states in part: Paul’s concern in writing to Timothy is that the male and female relationship may find application in the church, as it assembles for worship and work. Since it is based not on local custom but on God’s order established at creation, its validity continues and re- quires application also today ... “The Christian woman knows that if she were to demand the right to vote and to govern the congre- gation, she would be exercising authority over the man who is to be her head” (/, 2 Timothy, Titus by Armin Schuetze, Concordia Pub- lishing House, 1993, p. 46); and WHEREAS, These statements are contrary to the position of The Lutheran Church-—-Missouri Synod, which has resolved: “We hold likewise that Scripture does not prohibit women from exercising the franchise in congregational or synodical assemblies” (Res. 2- 17, 1969 Convention Proceedings, pp. 88-89); and WHEREAS, Synod in convention reaffirmed this position as re- cently as 1995 (Res. 3-05, 1995 Convention Proceedings, pp. 119-20); therefore be it Resolved, That Concordia Publishing House be instructed to im- mediately withdraw the above-named commentaries from circula- tion until their contents become consistent with our synodical po- sition; and be it further Resolved, That the President of Synod be directed to investigate the process followed in reviewing and approving these materials and report his findings through the official publications of Synod by Dec. 31, 1998; and be it finally Resolved, That Concordia Publishing House be required in the future to identify as to source in its catalogs and publicity any ma- terials being reprinted from publishing houses other than our own.
