V., 221.

The deliberations on legitimate self-defense, Vol. 64, 265–276, date from the
late autumn of 1530, as follows with certainty from comparing their content with
other writings of Luther's on the same subject. I am
in a position to furnish full proof of this. —

Of Luther's so-called Table Talk it is generally known that not all the pieces
included in it bear that name with equal right.
Besides Luther's actual conversations, they contain letters, deliberations, portions of
sermons, and excerpts from other writings, some reprinted from the German editions and
some translated from the Latin. The same matters are, in the Table Talk,
often duplicated, often only slightly altered versions of one another; sometimes the very
most trifling matters are told three or four times over with minor variations. —
A few examples may illustrate what has just been said.
The entire "Instruction on How One Should Confess," Vol. 21, p. 244ff., is, up to the
examination according to the Ten Commandments on p. 248, found in the Table Talk, Vol. 59, 84ff.
Vol. 59, p. 68 is a translation of the Latin letter in de Wette,
V, 221.
Vol. 59, p. 63 is a section from the Large Catechism, Vol. 21, 136.
The same account occurs at 59, p. 76, and at 61, 216. Compare Tom. IX, p. 23 seq.
Vol. 59, p. 133, No. 1194 { occurs in a somewhat different version at Vol. 59, p. 153,
{ and, slightly altered, at Vol. 59, p. 153, note 3.
Vol. 59, pp. 333–336 is a translation from the Commentario in Epistolam
S. Pauli ad Galatas, only here and there somewhat rearranged, Tom. I,
pp. 277–281.
Vol. 57, p. 286f., line 1 from the bottom: "This Doctor," etc., once more,
in another version, in the text, and unchanged in the note, Vol. 59,
p. 312f.
