BUDGET DISBURSEMENTS — AFRICA
Here our costs during the fiscal year just ended have risen
sharply over the amounts expended during the previous year,
the chief reason being that more American workers are now on
the African field. Our present missionary staff consists of nine-
teen pastors, five teachers, three doctors, four nurses, and two
laymen, making a total of thirty-three American families serving
the Synodical Conference mission in Nigeria.
A report just received from the field treasurer, Mr. R. W.
Bowman, includes some interesting information:
During the first six-month period of 1958 the Lutheran Hospital
at Eket, Nigeria, reported total income from fees, bed grant,
CA 0) ie .. £6,439
whereas expenditures for repairs, maintenance, African staff sal-
aries, etc., totaled eee eee £7,648
There are 28 automobiles (mostly Volkswagen) on the field, with an
aggregate value of £15,368 ($43,030.00).
We have 25 permanent homes for missionaries (including four duplex
residences), representing a total cost of £55,024 ($154,069.00).
An itemization of actual budget disbursements in our African
field since 1946 is submitted herewith for comparative purposes:
194647 _ $ 68,122.74 1952—53 __..-_..- $184,858.66

The books of the Missionary Board are presently being audited
by Tracy B. Whitton & Company, Certified Public Accountants.
Their Certificate of Audit will appear in the printed book of
ProcEEprincs of this convention.
We shall be glad to answer any questions regarding this report
or the accompanying schedules. In closing, we pray that the Lord
may continue to bless the work of our Negro missions in the years
which lie ahead. To Him we look for guidance and direction, for
we realize that “without Him we can do nothing.”
Respectfully submitted,
