Lutheran Synodical Conference, 1958 108
A total of 110 students (45 boys and 65 girls) comprise the
boarding department — an increase of 25 over the figures reported
at the 1956 convention (36 boys and 49 girls). It is quite evident
that both dormitory and classroom space are urgently needed.
Thirty-eight city students are enrolled. Twenty-one boys have
indicated their desire to study for the ministry.
Ninety per cent of the student body of the high school and
normal departments are Lutherans, while the remaining 10 per
cent are being instructed for membership in the Lutheran Church.
Your Board of Control considers this an excellent indication of the
value of the school.
On May 24, 1957, 16 students received high school diplomas
while 3 received teacher-trainine certificates, Rev. Edgar Hom-
righausen, now president of the Southern District of the Lutheran
Church — Missouri Synod, was the commencement speaker.
The Academy was represented at the convention of the Asso-
ciation of Lutheran Colleges, held at Valparaiso, Ind., October 4—5,
1957, by the president of the school, Rev, W. H. Ellwanger.
Board meetings held since the last Synodical Convention were
in January, April, and September of 1957, January, April, and
July of 1958. Building committee meetings were held in addition,
as needed. On February 11, 1958, members of the A. L. A. Board of
Control met with the I. L. C. Board of Control at Greensboro, N.C.,
to discuss mutual problems.
“The Chapel of the Air,” a weekly radio program sponsored
by the Academy, continues to be heard in and about the Selma
area, and favorable comments are heard with respect to this fine
program.
The school’s faculty is made up of the following:
Rev. W. H. Ellwanger, M.A. (president); Prof. P. R. Hunt,
Prof. John Moss, Prof, James Gildersleeve, Prof. Gerald Homp,
Prof. Henry Latzke, Miss Rosa J. Young, Mrs. Jessie Ellwanger,
B.A., and Mrs. P. R. Hunt.
Grade school teachers are Miss Anna Dominick and ‘Miss
Barbara Grayson, both products of Alabama Lutheran Academy-
College. The grade school continues to play an important part in
practice teaching for students in the Academy’s normal department.
We feel much credit must be given our staff of teachers as they
work under conditions which are not the most favorable for teach-
ing. We continue to hope that the buildings long. desired, and
approved, may soon become a reality so that A.L.A. can do its
work more effectively. :
"Alabama Lutheran Academy-College is governed by a Board
of Control made up of Rev. Wm. G. Kennell (Montgomery ),.chair-
man; Rev. A. Dominick (Mobile), secretary; Rev. Rupert Eggert
(Pensacola), Rev. Chas. Graeber (Holy Ark), Mr. Posey Williams
(Selma), with’ one vacancy at present. Rev. W. H. Ellwanger,
president of the school, is an advisory member,
Mrs. B. E. Skinner, long-time teacher on the Alabama Field,
and for some years Matron at the Academy was called to her home
above since the last convention. Mrs. Lucille Clark has been serv-
ing as Assistant Matron. - . . : nes ‘
Your Academy Board is convinced of the tremendous amount
of work yet to be done in this southern area where the. school is
