Report of Committee
for Convention Nominations

The Committee for Convention Nominations, elected at the
St. Louis convention in 1979, consists of seven pastors, three
teachers, and five laypersons, plus the chairman and the
corresponding secretary of the previous committee as advisory
members. Specific procedures and duties of the committee are
set forth in Bylaws 2.139—2.145.

Four meetings, extending over a total of 10 days, were held
to establish policies and procedures and to evaluate nearly
2,000 names that had been submitted for consideration as
candidates. Requests for names of possible candidates were
directed to District Presidents, college presidents, pastors, and
congregations through the Circuit Counselors, school princi-
pals, minority groups, the District executives, the church
periodicals, and others. Evaluations of those being considered
by the committee were requested from various sources, includ-
ing chairmen of boards and commissions, executive secre-
taries, college presidents, local pastors and teachers, Circuit
Counselors, and District Presidents.

In an effort to provide more complete information on all
nominees the committee asked all candidates to furnish the
usual biographical information. As a means of increasing data
for evaluation, the committee also invited candidates to answer
several questions. Responses to these questions will be made
available and distributed to the voting delegates.

Regarding additional nominations from the floor, Bylaw
2.145 states: “Any delegate making a nomination from the
floor shall have secured prior written consent of the candidate
whom he wishes to nominate. He shall immediately submit to
the chairman of the Committee for Convention Nominations
this document and written pertinent information concerning
his nominee as detailed in 2.143 e.” The committee asks that

this “pertinent information” include the nominee’s response to
the questions asked.

Final selection of candidates was made by the committee
after much prayer, careful evaluation, and with consideration
for broad geographic presentation where possible.

According to Bylaw 2.143 e of the synodical Handbook, the
report on final nominees for synodical office “shall contain
pertinent information concerning each candidate, such as age,
occupation, or profession, District affiliation, residence,
specific experience and qualifications for the office in question,
and ifthe candidate so desires, also a brief personal statement.”
To give the nominees opportunity to provide such a statement,
they were invited to respond to the following three questions:
1. Please state why you feel you are particularly qualified for

the position for which you are being considered (50 words or

less).

2. Please state your greatest joy or disappointment in the
direction the Synod is moving (50 words or less).

3. Please state, as a responsible churchman, the direction in
which the Synod should move in response to the Great

Commission of the Lord (75 words or less).

The statements of the nominees are printed with the
numbers 1, 2, or 3, indicating the question to which they are
responding. An asterisk (*) next to a name indicates the
statement has been cut because it exceeded the word
limit.

Recommendations

1. By means of a separate overture, the committee recom-
mends that the Argentine District be permitted to elect
members of the Board of Control of Buenos Aires.

2. By means of a separate overture, the committee recom-
mends that this convention change the deadline for submitting

Force, IT, 2.

Experience as District Secretary; experience
as administration officer in my Naval
Reserve Career; I am well read in the
Handbook; if the Lord should call meto this
position through the church, that is qualifi-
cation enough.

My greatest joy is and has always been that
my church body has as its first priority the
proclamation of the living Christ, because
that is my first priority, too.

Direction? Forward is our only option. Ifthe
question is How? then my response is:
Strengthen the work of the local parish.
Maintain (restore?) sound Biblical procla-

pulpits; strengthen and increase Bible
study—we don’t have any source of direc-
tion apart from the Holy Scriptures. Help
each other focus on the Christ crucified and
risen. ‘Cause, brethren, we have nothing
else to offer!

Herbert A. Mueller

1. I have never felt comfortable “campaign-
ing” in any sense for an office. Would prefer
to have the electorate determine for itselfon
the basis of my performance.
