To Broaden “Ministers of the Gospel”
Definition Before the Law
WHEREAS, It is our desire to have all professional church
workers receive equal treatment under the tax laws of our
nation; and
WHEREAS, At the present time, all workers classed as
“ministers of the Gospel” receive a tax deduction for housing
allowance. This deduction includes all costs incurred for
housing, including utilities (this deduction is in addition to
interest and taxes if the worker is purchasing a home); and
WHEREAS, We presently classify directors of Christian
education and teachers in our Lutheran schools as ministers of
the Gospel only if they are of the male sex; and
WHEREAS, Many workers serving in identical responsibili-
ties and duties are denied the said tax benefits because, as
members of the female sex, we do not classify them as ministers
of the Gospel; and
WHEREAS, To classify them as ministers of the Gospel (1)
grants them no other benefits within the church, (2) in no way
is construed as related to the issue of ordination of women, (3)
provides them equal treatment with males under the tax laws
of our land; therefore be it
Resolved, That teachers, directors of Christian education,
directors of evangelism, and deaconesses serving our church
be classified as ministers of the Gospel under the laws of our
land without regard to sex, male or female.
