To Affirm Joyfully Agreement with ALC
WHEREAS, In 1969 the Synod saw fit to establish altar and
pulpit fellowship with The American Lutheran Church; and
WHEREAS, Differences of opinion between the Lutheran
Church—Missouri Synod and The American Lutheran Church
existed before fellowship was declared and continue to exist
after the declaration without being divisive of that fellowship;
therefore be it
Resolved, That the Synod joyfully affirm the overwhelming
agreement between itself and the ALC on Law and Gospel,
justification by faith, the real presence of Christ*in the
Sacrament, and the efficacy of Baptism; and be it further
Resolved, That the Synod clearly enunciate the Lutheran
principle that for the unity of the church it is sufficient that the
Gospel be purely preached and the sacraments be administered
according to Christ’s institution; and be it finally
Resolved, That the designation of fellowship in protest with
the ALC be dropped and full altar and pulpit fellowship be
reestablished.

To Reestablish Full Altar
and Pulpit Fellowship
with The American Lutheran Church
WHEREAS, Fellowship in the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a gift
that comes from God Himself; and
WHEREAS, In 1969 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
in convention recognized its fellowship with The American
Lutheran Church; and
WHEREAS, In 1977 and 1979 The Lutheran Church—Missouri
Synod in convention threatened its fellowship with The
American Lutheran Church by declaring and then reaffirming
a ‘state of fellowship in protest”; and
WHEREAS, On the basis of The Book of Concord, both synods
meet the criteria for altar and pulpit fellowship, namely, “He is
truly worthy and well prepared [for the Lord’s Supper] who has
faith in these words, ‘Given and shed for you for the remission
of sins!’’’ (Luther’s Small Catechism, Part VI) and “for it is
sufficient for the true unity of the Christian church that the
Gospel be preached in conformity with a pure understanding of
it and that the Sacraments be administered in accordance with
the divine Word” (Augsburg Confession, Art. VII); and
WHEREAS, Lutheran unity in 1980 is vital for presenting
Christendom and society with one voice speaking strongly for
a theology of the cross and for salvation by grace through faith
in Jesus Christ; therefore be it
Resolved, That The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in
convention assembled at St. Louis, Mo., July 3—10, 1981,
reestablish full altar and pulpit fellowship with The American
Lutheran Church.

To Implement Fellowship
WHEREAS, In many areas of the Synod God has blessed,
reconciled, and strengthened homes, families, and congre-
gations through our fellowship within the Lutheran family;
and
WHEREAS, All Lutherans heartily confess, “It is sufficient
for the true unity of the Christian Church that the Gospel be
preached in conformity with a pure understanding of it and
that the Sacraments be administered in accordance with the
divine Word” (Augsburg Confession, Art. VII); and
WHEREAS, Our Lord prayed for such unity “that the world
may believe that Thou hast sent Me” (John 17:21); and
WHEREAS, Any movement toward separation and sectari-
anism is contrary to the clear will of our Lord; therefore be it
Resolved, That The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
reaffirm and, where practical, further implement pulpit and
altar fellowship with our brothers and sisters of The American
Lutheran Church; and be it further
Resolved, That our congregations seek to establish a work-
ing, serving, supporting relationship with all other willing
Lutheran congregations so that the work of evangelizing,
teaching, baptizing, and discipling may be more urgently and
effectivley carried out in our communities.

To Continue Pulpit and Altar Fellowship
with The American Lutheran Church
WHEREAS, We share a common confessional heritage with
The American Lutheran Church in our subscription to the
inspired Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions (the
constitutions of both Lutheran church bodies affirm this
confessional commitment); and
WHEREAS, Our Lord Himself prayed that His disciples be
one (John 17:20-23) and St. Paul counsels us to maintain the
unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, regarding strife and
