HIGHER EDUCATION 233
Wayne seminary and Dr. Ralph Bohlmann of our St. Louis
seminary.
During the last biennium 123 men have been certified for
ministry in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod by the
Colloquy Board.
After a great deal of encouragement from the Council of
Presidents, special retreats sponsored by the Colloquy Board
were held Feb. 6—8, 1980, at Colorado Springs, Colo., and Feb.
13—15 at Philadelphia, Pa., for men who graduated from
Seminex between 1974 and 1977, most of whom were already
serving in congregations of the Synod but who had not been
certified for the pastoral ministry in the Synod.
Thirty-three men responded. An earlier survey indicated
that this represented two-thirds of those serving LCMS con-
gregations who had not yet been certified.
At the retreats a theological paper by the Rev. Dean Wenthe
and a presentation of the relation of pastors and congregations
to the Synod by Dr. Herbert Mueller, Secretary of the Synod,
and District President Eldor Meyer were given and discussed.
Interviewing teams consisting of professors from both semi-
naries, Colloquy Board members, and District Presidents spent
several hours with each candidate.
On March 3 the board met and decided to certify three of the
candidates without additional study. The board determined to
certify six others who were encouraged to do additional study
in certain areas, and 27 who could be certified after special
studies in specified areas. One of the men would have to study
on the campus of an LCMS seminary before certification.
Presently all but four have successfully completed the
assigned studies and have been certified.
Those certified as a result of these special retreats are Tim
Anderson, Jack Bailey, Mark Bartels, Allen Bauer, Wayne
Berkoben, Duane Feldman, Paul Fitzpatrick, Craig Ford,
Robert Graul, Mark Hayman, Duane Heckman, Lee Heine,
Terry Herzberg, Godfrey Jarabek, Douglas Iben, William Kay,
David Kasischke, Robert Korytkowski, Robert Kuppler, James
Mann, Don Mulfinger, Steven Olsen, Richard Pieplow, Kenton
Rohrberg, Norman Schmoock, Del Schomburg, Tim Schreiber,
Edward Scott, Ronald Sprehe, Darrell Stuehrenberg, Norman
Timmermann, Arthur Wehrmeister, and Eric Westmark.
Candidates for the pastoral office are assigned of course of
study in consultation with the faculty and registrar of the
seminary they choose to attend. Each seminary also has a
colloquy advisor, who is to serve as their academic supervisor
and advise the Colloquy Board about their progress. The
colloquy candidate is asked to serve a vicarage or a supervised
ministry after he has finished his course of study. This period
of supervised ministry is to last for one year. During this year
of preparation he is to be observed by an experienced super-
visor to help the candidate to function in a parish and to be
helpful to him in understanding the work, to fit him for better
service in the parish. It is important for the proper preparation
of a pastor that this supervised ministry be served for a whole
year, so that the man will be faced with all sorts of parish
situations. This is a year of learning and a necessary part of the
preparation of a man for ministry. No candidate ought to miss
this opportunity for growth and proper preparation for his
future work.
Although the Colloquy Board has shortened this supervised
ministry in extraordinary cases in the past, the board will ask
all candidates to do their full year of this learning process.
The coloquy program for the pastoral office and the program
for teachers have served to bring many wonderful people into
full-time service in the church, and we thank God for all of
them.
